well done clinton woods

this is a guy who has done it the hard way...he is genuine world class , taken on all comers and now will be rewarded with a big fight in vegas vs gonzalez.

im happy for the big guy , he will be making decent money and hopefully get thru this fight so that he can get a 4th fight with glen johnson.

remember clinton did it the old fashioned way by winning the british commonwealth and european title before going after the world title.

he knows his limitations but i think he will win his next 2 fights then hopefully get a massive payday against someone that will set him up for life.

Yes, I have a lot of respect for Clinton Woods, BUT i am not interested in match against Gonzales - good luck tmo Woods though!

Its not really a "big fight" with Gonzales. Ive even heard rumours theyre not having the cameras rolling for his fight... ?

He'll clown Gonzalez again and beat Johnson easier If he fights Glen again depending on If he counter punches or brawls.

Taken on all comers?

He turned down Calzaghe and Peter Oboh. When you look at Gonzalez (Again) and Johnson X 3, and after his latest win a forth is in the pipeline, I find it a bit frustrating.

He should be making far more than he is and should never have turned down Calzaghe for either TV or Financial reasons. Would have been a massive fight and still could be. But hey, if he's happy on Hatton's shirt tails then good luck to him.

But he's treading water IMO.

Ooh, it was all Woods' fault that a Calzaghe fight didn't happen? Did Warren even plan to make Calzaghe-Woods? Methinks not. What was the deal with Warriors Boxing, teaming up to win the Woods-Johnson 3 purse big - it was surely to get a better chance of making Calzaghe-Johnson.

It's always the other guy who doesn't want to fight the SN fighter, isn't it?

Oboh fight would of been peanuts. Interesting what sort of money/terms were offered for calzaghe fight.

Have to agree though, Clinton has worked hard for what hes got / where he's got and massive respect to him for that. he's also a very likable and articulate guy. Any man who goes to the US to fight a prime roy jones deserves respect, no matter the outcome.

Any man who's Promoter wins the purse bid and sends him to fight a prime Roy Jones in Roy Jones's Sponsors home town (Nike) should have asked questions IMO.

His own Promoter re-sold the fight to the Yanks and pocketed more himself than Clinton did as a result. In short he sold his own man down the river for thirty pieces of Silver. Disgraceful IMO.

Sure the Woods fight would have been made and would have been easier to make. But nevertheless the offer that WAS made to Woods was far more than he had ever earned or ever will earn (Including Jones) but the stumbling block was that Hobson didn't want to put his title on the line against JC (Work it out for yourself).

In fact, now they have got stuck with Gonzalez (After doing an 11th hour deal that will see both fighters getting much less than the Warren purse offer for the same fight that was delivered to the IBF, they have tried to revive the JC fight (But again without Clinton putting his title up) NO CHANCE.

So there you go Clinton will fight (And probably beat) Gonzalez again
and all then he has to look forward to is a fourth meeting with new #1 Glenn Johnson. Beat him again and they may let him take him home for keeps. ANy odds on Gonzalez 3 after that.

As I said, treading water.

boxingchat, I don't think any of us want to see another fight with Gonzalez, but it's called a mandatory old boy, something you may not have come across terribly often

We all know that Calzaghe is better than Woods, but ironically at least Woods fought Jones and Johnson. How many times did Joe find a way out of fighting Glencafe? Is it the same # of times that Clinton fought Johnson perhaps.

Calzaghe was injured. Woods had to fight them, they were mandatories. How many voluntaries has Woods fitted into his action packed career? I like Woods but quite simply Hobson does'nt do enough for him as he's losing too much with Hatton to finance Woods career.

Injuries are injuries and in this game they stop you working.

SN should all be experts in "treading water", especially as far as Calzaghe is concerned

Maybe, but its refreshnig to see a British fighter fight undoubtedly the best in his division.
Also why turn around a comment about Clinton Woods deserving respect into a dig at his promoter(s).

Oh, does Joe have to do different training when it comes to fighting Johnson? i.e. more dangerous, high impact training that kills off Johnson fights? hahaha

Clinton isn't a huge draw, and his management did bloody well to get him so many title opportunities in my opinion. He's had more bites at the cherry than he would have expected, had the Johnson fights in his back yard,

Sure, he's not earning megabucks, but there really aren't that many fights out there for him in the Light heavyweight division that are going to be big earners. There are no established stars out there to compete against.

I would venture to say that Clinton relished his shot at Jones Jr. I doubt he fancied his chances much, because nobody in their right mind at that time believed they were going to beat him. Even Joe said in an interview once that in he couldn't have lived with Roy at his peak, and given Calzaghe's towering ego and self belief, that's saying a lot.

Clinton is a good solid, hard working pro, who isn't setting the world on fire, but thus far, he's had a good career.

As for the proposed Oboh fight, who the bloody hell HAS agreed to offer Oboh a shot at their title, are you suggesting Calzaghe would have, seeing as he thinks Froch beneath him, I doubt that.

As for the Calzaghe fight, I'd very much like to hear what Fight Academy's take on the proposed fight is, because i suspect it's not as cut and dried as is made out, what was being demanded in return? Options? What pay was on offer, etc.

I've no axe to grind, but given some of the recent dire fare that SN have served up, I think it's a bit of a cheek to be hurling criticism at Clinton's promoters, they've done a better job with Clinton than is being done with Macca lately, who seems to be slipping into obscurity, whilst Haye is building a fan base.

Nobody is perfect in the world of promotion, it's a tough business to be in, but I think Clinton has been pretty well served, though of course, I'm not in possession of any financial facts and figures.

I like Clinton. He's a good, honest pro and a world class one without doubt. Despite his numerous chances with the IBF, he never claimed he was best in the world...To his credit, he revised his training and dieting & had a 3rd fight with Johnson that was easily the equal as Adamek-Briggs 2.

Hard to call Joe Calzaghe's career an honest one. Or Alex Arthur's - waiting till Guzman vacates, very brave! - or Enzo Macca's - taking on a clubfighter

Guzman is fighting Katsidis at Lightweight, he's signed for it and has injured his hand. Nothing to do with bravery, Guzman is expected to vacate so Arthur will fight for the vacant title or id he does not vacate the Interim. If Guzman does not vacate and Arthur wins the Interim he HAS to fight Guzman next.

Learn the business before you make stupid comments.
