does anyone remember the brilliant terry waller? 5 ABA wins and one runner up between 1966 and 1974. out of the lynn club, this boy could box (understatement of the year)

Nicky Gargano wasn't bad neither!

gargano was very good, an old mate of my dads.

I dont know much about Terry Waller, Harry. But I think you would be hard pressed to find a better more successful amateur than Dick McTaggart. He won 5 ABA titles between 1956 to 1965. He picked up the Val Barker trophy for the best boxer at the 1956 Olympics on his way to winning Gold and won a bronze 4 years later.

Would be very interesting to find out these guys records.

That set of figures is hugely impressive and surely would see McTaggart crowned the king of British amateurs?

interestingly he was beat 3 times by fighters from the same club based in London.

From that same time period there was also Chris Finnegan, Conteh, Vernon Sollas, Billy Knight, Minter and slightly later Pat Cowdell.

Sollas was a complete flop as a pro.A real disappointment considering the skills he had.

ok, ok, mctaggart's record trumps terry's from an international perspective and the beers wearing off too. but waller is one of our unsung greats and i thought i'd give him a boost.


i watched sollas closely from am days through being touted as a possible pro contender to his sad early departure from our sport. poor old vern.

Waller was an all-time great. He licked the likes of Maurice Hope and Dave Green, and five ABA titles in his era is worth about 50 today.

Considering he is probabaly the Lynn AC's most successful fighter, the club really don't pay enough homage to him. The pictures are all run-down on the gym's wall and are very rarely looked after unlike the Repton where pretty much every boxer is pictured somewhere. There is a nice section where all their England boxer's pictures are. The Lynn should take a leaf out of their book. There are no pics of people like Danny Williams (1994 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist & regular England rep), Wayne Alexander (the club's last ABA champ in 1994), Fola Okesola (1996 Olympic rep & 1998 Commonwealth Games rep & Euro championships rep). It's a bit disgraceful really.

i'd like to know too. perhaps i'll pop down to the lynn club and ask a few questions

Hi, I’ve been looking into trying to find old photos for my dad and come across this post back from 2007 but my Dad is Terry Waller who your talking about. He’s doing really well, we live in Kent.

Harry Mallin was Britain’s best ever amateur by far.5 abas in a row, 2 Olympic medals, never lost an amateur bout in 300 contests.

Errol Christie must rank in the top few as an amateur. Won every championship he entered winning 4 schoolboy titles 2 junior aba 3 Nabc senior aba title at 17 and European under 21. Also Terry marsh an outstanding amateur and pro.

Again it's all about context. The 24 bouts listed here on Boxrec state that 8 of his opponents were having their *Debut fights. This after Harry had won Olympic Gold.

*although most likely not accurate.
