the other guy that comes to mind was a lad from mansfield in the UK STEVE WILLIAMS he was a professional jockey and took up pro boxing, he went on to lose a British featherweight title fight a few years ago.

any other sportsman that went on to fight in the pro ranks

Must be a bunch of others. With the exception of kickboxing (for obvious reasons) and Mundine, athletes from other sports tend to do quite badly in pro boxing.

Paul Berlenbach was an Olympic wrestling champ.
Became a boxer later on and won the Lightheavyweight championship.
Ive always been hugely impressed with this.

Jack O'Halloran and Charlie Powell were football players.

Joe Dillon -a good flyweight of the 1920's - was a jockey.

Elmer "Violent" Ray was alligator wrestler and battle-royal champion before he made it big in boxing.

Anthony Mundine is really a phenomenal athlete. I've heard that his name and boxing were first seriously mentioned when he appeared in an exhibition bout when he was a rugby player, and those who watched said that if he took up boxing he would have a lot of success.

I still don't particularly like the guy, but you can't deny what a talent he is. Remember that he had no real amateur career to speak of, so he really didn't start boxing until his mid 20s. He is coming into the beginning of his prime now, and I would favour him to beat ANY middleweight in the world if he goes down in weight. If he stays at SMW, fights with Kessler and Calzaghe would be very competitive.

He is a very ambitious guy in terms of what he speaks of (wants to have titles at MW, SMW and LHW before he retires) but he really needs to start stepping up his quality of opposition. Problem is, I think there will be a pretty short queue of people who actually want to fight him on current form.

agreed apart from Kessler already beat the shit out of him once.

..re: elmer ray and the alligator.....the alligator almost bit him in half, but the same judges who worked his first fight with ezzard charles gave him the decision.

I don't think anybody can argue AGAINST him being Top 5.

Samart Payakarun - world champion kickboxer. Beat (admittedly an old) Lupe Pintor in 5 for the 122 title in the mid 80's. Went on to lose his title to Fenech then became a buddhist monk on his return to Thailand. His countrymen had bet and lost heavily on the Fenech fight and Payakarun was in genuine fear for his life
