According to Boxrec, Jim Barry died aged 30 in 1917. I've recently come across a portrait photo reportedly taken in a Chicago studio in 1921 when he would've been 35. He seems much older, but abuse of narcotics and a bloody ring career would certainly have left their marks. There was a story many years ago, never confirmed, that Barry was really a mixed blood Irish-Ojibway from the Great Lakes region of Ontario. I notice that boxrec lists his first fight in LaSalle, Illinois, not that far from the Ontario border. Has anyone from IBRO ever looked into this?
