Real good amateur , beat Ray Leonard , but couldnt quite beat the top pros.
I remember seeing him fight Louis Mateo here in Chicago.(there was big hope for Louis and he could really punch, I sparred quite a bit with him).
Shields gave him a boxing lesson.
Anyone see Randy in any of his other fights?
He was beaten by Leonard in the pros.

I saw his fight with Tommy Hearns in which he may have been credited with a questionable knockdown. He was also on TV at least a couple times as an amateur.

I remember when he fought Andres "El Gato" Aldama of Mexico in the Pipino Cuevas-Espada III undercard. Aldama got robbed BIG TIME. And like how sour losers these Mexican fans were in the arena, they started throwing bottles to the poor Randy Shields. It reminded me when Marvin Hagler won the title from Alan Minter in Englande. Another horrible sight of sour losers throwing bottles to the ring.   :( :( :( :o :o :o

Ray Leonard once said that Randy Shields was the most determined man that he had ever faced, that he could really see it in his eyes. Reminds me of similar comments from past greats such as Joe Louis who said Jim Braddock was the most courageous man that he ever fought.

I saw Shields fight Sugar Ray Leonard in Baltimore.

Shields was a tall skinny fighter who had no big punch.

He was tough (could take punishment) and was in good condition.

There was nothing to choose from between him and Leonard.

Leonard didn't have the punch to hurt him. Shields didn't have the punch to hurt anyone.

They looked like mediocre 6 or 8-round level fighters at that time.

At one point during the fight Leonard hit the referee, then stopped to apologize to him.

As I walked out, the comments in the crowd (close to 100% black) were

"He (Leonard) has a long way to go."

kikibalt,

It looks like Randy is a heavyweight now.

His face looks good (nose and above and below eyes).
