hey..you're talking about my good friend and all time favorite great great fighter...Ezzard Charles. To show how things have changed when he was told of the match, the very tricky clever overlin said "No guy with 22 fihgts is going to beat me." Later fought to a draw.

Yep Boone Kirkman. One of my early favorites. I went to most of his fights here in Seattle. He had a large and loyal following here. Kind of like the Joe Mesi fans in Buffalo.

There was talk of him fighting Pat Duncan (forgive me if that's the wrong fighter - I read there was a local match brewing...) in his comeback? It would supposedly have been a huge draw?

What happened because he won his 4 comeback fights....

You're right Phil. There was a lot of local buzz about a possible Arrington-Kirkman match. At the time Kirkman was still popular here but was just a journeyman. Arrington thought himself a contender with bigger fish to fry. After a couple of Arrington loses talk of the fight died down. Arrington did not remain as popular as Kirkman after a couple loses. The fight would have been a big draw had it happened at the right time.

yeah..Walker has a KOby Joe Dundee on his record...june 24, 1926. No, I don't have total recall...looked it up. I have the film of the Schmelling fight and Max gestures to the referee to stop it before Walker gets killed. I don't know anything about the Dundee fight, but I've read here and there that Walker was never actually counted out. Schmelling hit him with the same kind of right hands that knocked out heavyweights. Walker was one tough little guy, wasn't he. (No question mark..rhetorical question.)

Here's one...What fighter went directly to the ministry after losing his world title?

I'm just guessing, but ..Henry Armstrong did go into the minsitry, but it wasn't right after he lost his title, so I'm far from certain I'm right on this one.

Wow I put up a tough one this time. Armstong became a minister in 1951. That was 6 years after his career ended. Big George went into the ministry after his loss to Jimmy Young. That was 5-6 fights after losing his title to Ali.

Hint- The only reason I know this one is because he was one of the local fighters who's career I followed closely

In 1980 I went to see Ricardo Cardona make the 6th defense of his WBA Junior-Featherweight title against local fighter Leo Randolph. Randolph beat Cardona in a very exciting fight by TKO in the 15th round. In his first defense only 3 months later he was kayoed by Sergio Palma in the 5th round.

A 1976 USA Olympian, Leo Randoph became a minister in Tacoma WA after losing his title to Palma and never fought again.

interesting...Max Schmeling only was counted out once in his carreer.....1928 against englishman Gypsy Daniels (a first-round lucky punch knockout, when Schmeling lost his concentration by greeting a friend in the audience !!!.....o.k., that's only a rumor)
