Anyone see Arguello-Olivares last night? it was shown late on Channel Four on a show called "The A-Z of Boxing".

I set the old machine to record but for some reason it messed up. Anyway, was the show any good? Did anyone see it? Does anyone know if there will be anymore broadcasts?

i diddn,t see it but i heard that it was the best boxing program ever made only joking

Yeah I did the same, set the video using the tvplus code thingys out of the paper and it didn't record.

Last night was the first of 13 episodes according to the tv guide.

I recorded it and watched this morning. Overall it wasn't a bad program, though it did have minor irritations like the voiceover referring to a "Rubens" Olivares.

It showed six or seven rounds of the Arguello-Olivares fight - I'd seen it b4 a few times, but it's always worth watching. Toe to toe exchanges and some hefty blows from both men, Great KO punch from Arguello.

It then showed the Angel Manfredy (A for Angel!) vs Calvin Grove fight - good entertaining scrap, which I'd not seen previously, and though I knew Manfedy had won it, I couldn't remember exactly how, so it still had that element of "build up" to the finish.

Moving along it did a quick piece on Henry Armstrong - no real fight action, just a (very) quick summary of his life. Then it finished with the Ali-Folley fight.

I'll be recording next week's - and I'm assuming they are finished with "A" and moving onto the likes of Basilio, Buchanan, Bruno, and maybe Braddock, etc.

I also recorded the USA Boxing on Ch5 after the above...good fight between Lucian Bute and Bika. Nothing spectacular, but entertaining enough.

Arguello was a tremenous fighter who had just about everything. He really is one of my favourite two or three fighters of all time and a real champion.

A real gentleman too, remembering how he responded after the Mancini bout.

I'm not in the UK right now, but my girlfriend's sister has ESPN classic at her place, and I'm sure I saw A-Z of boxing's presentation of Arguello v Olivares on that the other night. It's not great coverage and far inferior to their classic boxing presentations in general, but that fight is a rumbling classic and well worth a watch any time anywhere.

As an aside -- and stop me if you've heard this before -- I believe ESPN bought the rights to all their classic fights in one large lump from Bill Cayton, Mike Tyson's ex manager, for a gazillion dollars.

In all seriousness, what happend to Tolliver.... I remember him being showcased on Sky and he looked the part.

I think it's intended to be a weekly show....from memory it starts around 3:15 or 3:30 am...

ESPN Classic WOULD be brilliant if it varied its content.

Considering the huge vault of great material they have the usual suspects are trotted out far, far too often.

I hear the US version of ESPN Classics have recently started to show more than just Ali and Ray Robinson re-runs, with likes of more recent unsung classics like Mark Breland v Aaron Davis getting an airing.

I am hoping that the British version will soon follow suit

But I've seen footage on there of the fighters you mention that I'd not seen before.

I saw more of Tunney the other night than I had for a while or ever - depending on my amnesia - what a fighter.

Yes, it was well worth watching. Like I said earlier I knew Manfredy won, but couldn't remember how....the commentary kept stressing that he'd only had 15 or so fights against Grove's 55 or so, and I did begin to wonder if maybe i'd gotten confused and Grove had in fact won...he was fairly much in control for the early rounds. But once Manfredy got to him the years began to show.... got up from a knockdown, and was then caught on the ropes, taking all Angel's shots with nothing coming back, RSF.
