OFF TOPIC - MUGGED OFF - JOINING A GYM

by jamesmcdonnell
Well, it had to happen some day, after living in London for 36 years, I finally got MUGGED!
I've always prided myself on not being the victim type, and indeed I'm not. However, after rushing in to save a mate from being mugged and getting a beating, after he hung around watching a group of ghetto 'yoot' a bit too long, I ended up being treated like a football by three hoodrats from Tulse Hill Estate, who after booting me aroud the floor made of with my bike, whilst my 'mate' did a fekking runnerand left me for dead with three people attacking me!
My pride is more hurt than anything else, I did manage to twat one of them quite hard, (thought it was with my foot, not a hand) because my ankle and foot are killing me from the effort, but then the other two punched me in the back of the head and bundled me to the floor.
Thank fekk I was strong enough to get back to my feet whilst being pounded otherwise things would I fear have gotten really nasty.
Anyway, aside from sharing my pain with you, I'm also mentioning ths, because I'm contemplating joining a boxing gym to work on my punchpower, so that if anything similar happens again, they get a right kicking whether I end up getting battered or not.
Can anyone reccomend a good gym in or around the Brixton area, the only one I know is the McKenzie boxercise place, but that's not really a proper gym, it's an exercise place that charges gym membership rates.
I'm trying to find somewhere where I can go, hit the bag, and work on punch technique, and maybe at some point some light sparring, without getting my head panned in.
Any ideas anyone, I'm not rich enough to afford the cityboxer experience, and I'm a bit stumped.

Sorry to hear this James, it must be very upsetting and/or making your f@kkin livid.
I hope it has left you with no lasting physical or emotional scars.
Maybe one day you may bump into one of the hoodyscum again and get your revenge? Or maybe it's just best to rise above and let it go and just leave the scum to swim around in their grotty little world of anger, self abuse, violence ane hopelessness.

Fitzroy Lodge isn't far but I dunno whether they only cater for fighters, Lynn as well.
Saying that it's the end of the season I a lot of places shut down for the summer, but Amateur clubs def would be the cheapest.
Some places don't like non carded people, but if your a likeable fella, esp if ur a boxing man and offer to help out down there you will get looked after, and getting involved is real good socially.
As far as you getting mugged goes, try not to let it bother you, I know it will obviously knock a grown man's confidence, but stuff like this can make you feel insecure and a bit of a victim, and that is a vicious circle and would make it more likely to happen again.
At the end of the day you were unlucky, the trick of not getting in these situations, is not to put yourself in a vunerable position.
Being in better shape don't make much diff, there was 3 of them and they could have been armed, so the harder you fought back the more likely they would be to use something.
I'm just glad you are ok, that is the main thing

That's an interesting point when the great Emille Griffith got mugged about 10-15 years ago by 6 men with pipes and baseball bats the theory was the reason he took such a savage beating was unlike most men who would have gone down after one or two blows, Griffith being a superhard dude (in & out of the ring) kept getting up and fighting back, so hence shipped more punishment, possibly?
Or you could argue that being so tough may have saved his life, it's hard to tell.
Just a thought.

You should join a gym just so you can spank your f**king mate. Fancy running off after you've just helped him out.

I know what a pudendum! I didn't think about it at the time, I was just glad to be in one piece. He didn't end up losing anything, I lost a 300 quid bike.
I could have carried on fighting back, they weren't much cop considering there were three of them, and I'm hardly fekking Lennox Lewis when it comes to fighting, I figured though the more I fought back, the worse it would end for me.
However, had my 'mate' hung in there I'm pretty sure we would have discouraged them pretty quickly with a few slaps.
I just want to get in proper shape in case I need to deal with more nasties.

My mistake was attacking them to help by mate out. I am not the type to get mugged, I usually avoid trouble and see it coming early, and spot the people wh are likely threats.
The problem was my mate is neither streetwise, nor as it turned out, well equipped to deal with aggression.
I on the other hand, tend to react quite violently to intimidation or threats, despite not being a hard bastard by any stretch of the imagination, but I doubt very much if that situation would have occured if I had been on my own. I cycled past them without any threat of violence, it was only when they saw my mate who was 20 yards behind on foot, that they decided to make a move.
I should have left them to butt-fcuk the cowardly bastard.

Send him up here to Liverpool on his next Birthday and we'll get Purple Aki to feel up his muscles.

Sorry to hear that. That must be a pisser. It's never happened to me but if it had i'm sure i'd still be pacing my flat now planning my brutal revenge.
Your mate needs to be slapped then disowned.
Once that is accomplished - Take it to the streets!

Jame, doing a bit of boing might give you some confidence, but three half decent men will always put down one decent bloke.
Sorry to hear that happened to you.

Well, had I sparked the first geezer out, they other two might have thought better of it.
I did box when I was very young, but I just want to make sure that the next person who tries it on, gets hurt badly enough, quickly enough, to deter them.
Chances are if wouldn't have made much difference the other night, but It's a good reason to get fit anyway.

James, I'm sorry to hear about that but I agree with the concensus
about your welfare being paramount and that you came out with just
a few bruises. Its horrible and the people responsible are complete and
utter pondlife and scum.
Boxing is good to a point. Boxing teaches you how to fight one man
if there are three lunatics attacking you, throwing feints and jabs are
not going to do you much good if there is more than one person.
I wouldn't use boxing if I were attacked, I would strike the throat
with my fingertips with an open fingered jab but then weapons come out
if outnumbered and one of their mates goes down choking on their own
blood, the chances of getting stabbed to death go up big time. It is not
like were not reading it everyday. It is getting worse.

I've heard this is the best for dealing with muggers and attackers so check this out and there are a lot of clubs in London.
James, take it easy and chck out different martial arts clubs and settle on one that yuo enjoy, not whats he most effective, becuse they are all effective more or less. Let us know how it goes!

I boxed also am. and pro.
For self defense against more than one attacker or against certain weapons I prefer judo.
Good luck,

my preffered method of self defence - stick one on the biggest mouthiest one, his mates are only watching to see if hes alright with you before they pile in.... if you spark him, they will fold like the fake-burberry-teenage scum they are...
best way to win fights is NOT TO CARE what happens to you or them... no ditractions from what you are about to do the little mug... go ask samurai Bri about HAGAKURE

Bloody hell, Jimmy, really sorry to hear about this mate. Stuff like this is guaranteed to get any decent fellow's blood boiling.
Firstly, your 'mate'. I have to say the most strife I've ever been in is when trying to do the honourable thing for a couple of people who didn't really turn out to be mates at all. Of course, like you, they escaped in cowardly fashion whilst I took the stick.
Secondly, it's difficult to know what to do really. You can kick the shit out of one or two quite readily but when there's three or more you've got little chance. And even if one gets chin checked, out come the knives. If you are over about 25, your mind works completely differently to this type of vermin. These scumbags have zero sense of honour or respect and don't value human life at all.
Just glad you're OK. The boxing training certainly won't do any harm.

James,
Fitzroy lodge is the best bet. They cater for non-fighters but teach boxing to all.
PM Rocky Balboa, he has been training there for years. He knows Mick Carney quite well.
The fees are reasonable, and the place friendly. They dont tolerate wankers.

In this day and age, if you gave them a right kicking you would be the one getting nicked by the old bill!

That's precisely what I did, I twatted the biggest one. However, I wrongly assumed my 'mate' was still occupying at least one of the others. When in fact he'd had it on his toes down the road.
Sadly when lying on the floor being booted around by all three of them, it was evident that there was only one way this fight was going to go, and it wasn't going to be me triumphantly standing over their prostrate bodies, but rather me lying in a pool of my own blood, there wasn't a great deal of point trying to be a massive he-man, sometimes you have to concede you can't win this particular fight.

Great advice.
Hagakure is a fascinating read.
Miyamato Musashis Book of Five Rings has it right also.
