I hate to admit to it (as it often smacks of WWE) but this stuff is entertaining in a strange sort of way. You have to give it to Mayorga, he always seems to mix up a bit of interest in his fights by running his mouth. I actually like Vargas but i have to confess he did look a bit porky in that clip when he took his top off

both guys should be retired anyway.

Surely everyone prefers a bit of animosity/needle in their big fights, as opposed to a mutual appreciation society being formed? I know I, for one, do!

I prefer a tag line along the lines of:

“They’re getting it on because they don’t get along!…”

As opposed to:

“An exchange of skills between two well-trained and honed athletes”

Mayorga brings a bit of cheek/ and a sense of theatre to the proceedings.

He is cast as the pantomime bad guy and plays his role well.

His skills may be fast fading but he still knows how to sell a fight!

I'm surprised Vargas jumped across and smacked his man with a woman sitting next to him, he had to push her out the way to get to Mayorga. On re-watching the clip she manages to stumble out the way but it could have got a lot nastier. I think it was poor taste hitting Mayorga with a woman next to him, just my opinion.

I respect Vargas because win or lose he has ducked nobody throughout his career. However, in this bout i think he needs to resist getting dragged into a brawl and i don't know if he can do it. He was clearly upset when the crowd booed his safety first approach versus Castillejo and if he goes into the trenches with Mayorga i am not confident his chin can hold out.

Mayorga is clever as he is dragging Vargas into a war here, goading him to come out and start slugging on heart rather than head, Mayorga knows it is his only chance as he will otherwise get outboxed. I foresee a slugging "machismo" fight and i don't think Vargas can last in that environment anymore.

I hope Vargas can go out on a high. He really has faced just about everyone. A stoppage win over Mayorga will at least restore a bit of pride.

Ferroz was a winner for so long, taking on stiffer tests fight after fight. But then he just seemed to turn into a punch bag for the top guys after the life changing battle with Tito.

Anyway, back to the debate, and surely Vargas' chin will be key here. Mayorga's a crude brawler nowhere near big enough to be fighting at 162lbs, but Vargas will never, ever try to box his way to victory in his last fight. He'll bang and brawl, and his Taped-Fist-Trinidad ruined chin will do well to hold out.

In other news, I watched the brawl on youtube and I noticed that Mayorga wanted to go down to 147 after this fight to challenge Cotto, Margarito, Mosley et al. Surely pie in the sky. First, Mayorga is terribly overrated by the easily impressed by brawling US fight fan; he's simply not in the class of those man.

And second, he just can't make the weight. I remember he was scheduled to fight at 147 just after he lost his welterweight title to Spinks, looked shredded at the weigh-in with not and gram of fat on his torso, but came in about 6lbs above the limit, forcing King to find an alternate opponent. Does anybody else remember this?

No way he makes 147 now.
