For the first time ever, Wales has three boxing world champions at the same time.

AND

Wales currently has more major world champions than England (although this is not a first - in the days of fewer belts there have been lone Welshman as the UK's only world champ).

Only because Hatton is'nt that bothered about having a major championship belt these days.

3 belt holders(although only one is the best in his division) is a great achievement though.
Especially for just one gym!!!!

And Rees is the first Welshman to hold the 'world' light-welterweight title.

I realise Hatton is the division leader, but note I said MAJOR belts. Thus Wales = 2xWBO, 1xWBA, England = 1xIBF, 1xWBC.

But yes, generally I look at the British scene as a whole, and six "big four" belts is quite a tally (although should we consider an interim belt to be a MAJOR title?)

I still think in terms of 'The Big 3' in all honesty. WBC, WBA and IBF.

For me the WBO is a rung below. I know they are all run by corrupt and bogus bodies but if I were a pro I would want one of the first 3. Certainy in the States the WBO is still somewhat 'the ginger stepson' of the alphabet family.

On that basis you coud say its England 2 Wales 1

Just wandering when was Robbie Regan officially stripped of his WBO title.

I know he had his last fight in 1996... but I am sure he officially gave up his fight for his licence and therefore his belt on the Reid vs Malinga card.

A bit of a long shot, but did Regan, Jones and Calzaghe all officially hold WBO titles at the same time?

Anyway, Joe Calzaghe = Welsh? The Italian Dragon was born in England.

FFS His mum could have dropped him while on holiday in Timbuktu; he's still Welsh. Obviously there's no Welsh passport but the guy grew up there, has lived there all his life and continues to do so, and flies the Welsh flag at every fight. So YES he is Welsh.
