Witter hoping to lift Rovers for United clash



Junior Witter hopes showing off his WBC light-welterweight title on the pitch this Friday will give his team Doncaster Rovers a fighting spirit in their pre-season friendly with Manchester United.

Witter, who has become a football fan since being converted to a follower of Doncaster, will be a guest on the pitch for the game against the Premiership champions which marks the official opening of Rovers' new home - the Keepmoat Stadium.

The Yorkshire boxer defends his world title for the second time against US-based Guyanan Vivian Harris at the The Dome at Doncaster Lakeside on Friday, September 7.

Witter is thrilled to be fighting his mandatory challenger so close to his home in Doncaster on a Hennessy Sports show to be televised live by Sky Sports. The major show will launch the new boxing season on Sky Sports.

"My girlfriend has got me into following Doncaster Rovers and it will be great to show the Doncaster people the most prestigious world title belt in boxing today," said Junior.

“I’m sure Rovers will show a great fighting spirit and spring an upset. It would be a real Rocky story if they could and I’m glad to be part of the special occasion in the club’s history.

“I only ever used to watch the World Cup, but since I have moved to Doncaster I have taken more of an interest in it.

"I’m from Bradford but Doncaster is my home now and I only live five minutes away from the Dome where I will be defending my title, so I shouldn’t be late on the night!

“I’ve had to fight all over the country but this is great for my fans in Yorkshire. It’s easy for them to get there from Sheffield and Bradford so hopefully the noise from my fans will help keep the title in Yorkshire on September 7.”

Will anyone remember that Witter is a world champ? he's been out the ring to long

Junior is a good fighter.

But it takes more than a football shirt to become a Donny Lad.

this seems to be another gimmik from wellington to try and sell tickets witter is not in to football why do people think that if you say that you support a football team that the local people will follow that fighter the way to get people to follow fighters is to lower the ticket prices nuff said

Why does it smack of desperation? It's what Hannessy does with Froch, too, so it's obviously in his promoters' repertoire. I don't see anybody saying Froch must be desperate for shadown boxing with half the Forrest team before most his major fights. It's just kitsh and a liitle tired.

Rather like 'variety shows' that include comedians who tell one liner jokes like 'My wife said to me 'this year I want to go somewhere I've never been'. I said 'thy the kitchen''.

It's old and obvious and a little shit.

i knew that mate - only cos sven had his first game in charge of the mancs there and i wondered why belle vue suddenly looked like a decent ground on the pictures!
it was a hole when i went there a few seasons back.

witter might have been better off wearing a leeds top cos all the lads i know in donny support them anyway.

i have been critical of hatton but i cant argue with the castillo victory and the fact he is going to face mayweather.

it's a great fight and hatton has balls for taking it, especially at 147. he could win, and by god i hope he does, but i think mayweather will box his ears off.
hatton avoided witter because he knew his style would give him fits and mayweather is just a souped-up witter.
as for junior, the fight with harris should be a massive fight in the UK but hatton has totally stolen his thunder.
if only he has taken on kelson pinto when he had the chance.
