Trying a different method this time, instead of being right at 147...what's everyone's thoughts on this strategy?

Good idea I think.

He should fight at the weight that he feels most comfortable and performs best at.

Well that's what Ray Hatton says, but it's not upto Ray Hatton.. it's upto Kerry Kayes. And Kerry Kayes will want to pack muscle on him again..

BS, how much did he weigh fightnight against Castillo? 150? He'll weigh near 147 and fight near 147 just like Mayweather does. The only difference is he doesn't need to cut water to make weight and should be fresher.

Against Collazo they probably tried to get him coming into the ring at 155/160

He weighed 11st6 in the ring against Collazo. Kayes says it was because Ricky was eating burgers from Mcdonalds after the weigh in and chinese that night..!

Because only 7 lbs of muscle shouldn't affect a man so much, but it could make a significant difference to his stength and power. I could guess, anyway

HE weighed 160lbs against Collazo?? WOW Thats heavy and 13lbs is allot of weight to put on at a new weight. Needless to say no way Ricky weighs less than 147 come fight night and he won't weigh much less than 147 on the scales either

And yes if hes downing the junk food after a weigh in it will hardly help him put on the most athletic of performances.

Yeah, the last thing you want is a whole bunch of processed, fast burn carbs all in one go. It'll lead to a massive energy drop off several hours later.

I see Hatton coming in at a bright-eyed-bushy-tailed, razor sharp 145-146 and putting on no more than 5 or 6 lbs after the weigh-in.

sorry Matty but i think you've misinterpreted the article and the quotes. Looks to me like they are intending to go into the fight at the weight Ricky normally does, but why would they drain down to 140 now that they don't need to?

i think they are just saying that he won't 'bulk up' excessively and make the mistake of trying to make himself a welterweight like against Collazo. i may be wrong but i can't see why Rickywould drain himself down to 140 with it not being a requirement as he doesnt actualy fight at that weight!

Excellent idea!!! I thought he might do this, he lost alot of his output/stamina in the Collazo fight plus the extra 7lbs obviously doe help is speed. With PBF not being a BIG puncher I think its a risk worth-taking, should make for a better fight IMO.

I can't fcuking Wait!!!

7lbs of Extra Muscle shouldn't hinder speed if its put on properly. Ask 100metre sprinters how much time in the weight room they spend. Ask Olympic male gymnasts.

Eating a whole bunch of processed, fast burn carbohydrates from burger buns and chinese food -- not to mention the crap they shove in a Macdonalds and the MSG they put in Chinese food -- is what made him slow. That, and the fact that he clearly doesn't train with quite the same edge when he's not facing a 'name', the fact that it was his first time in the States, the fact the opponent wasn't named until 6 weeks before the fight, and he only travelled to the states a few days before hand.

Its how long he can remain at full speed though, he would tire quicker carrying the extra 7lbs. I don't know what his build up to the Collazo fight was like though, so you could well be right

Because Kerry Kayes is basically a bodybuilder from a bodybuilding background, its what he craves.. you cannot train for hypertrophy in boxing, its ludicrous.. a 5ft6 bloke coming in at middleweight with muscle and bulk (a naturally stumpy bloke at that - just look at Ricky's fingers ffs) was obv going to fornicate up his foot speed and balance.. his hooking punches on the pads in training were faster and harder with the extra muscle but that is not being in the ring, maneuvering and boxing is it..

Kayes needs to be fired for this fight, if he trains for hypertrophy for Mayweather he wont win 10 seconds of the fight..

Carbo is right. The opinion that Hatton was slow against Collazo because the 'extra seven pounds' he had on slowed him down is a total misconception. Those seven pounds would have been there at the fight anyway, the reason he was out of his peak conditioning that night was because he didn't treat the fact that he didn't have to cut weight with respect. It was because he carbed up completely wrong and he was trying to match Collazo for size (silly really because Ricky is NOT a welterweight).

Ricky cutting down to 140 would be a big mistake, what Ray is saying is that they will train and eat the same and only bulk up a little bit because they don't need to catch up to Floyd in terms of size. They'll make the exact same preparation as Ricky normaly does just without the hindrance of keeping one eye on weight for the day before the fight.

Yeah fair point.

He should come in at his ideal weight without having to boil down for the weigh in, I just don't think he should set out to put 7lbs of extra muscle. Hopefully the Collazo fight was an excellent lesson in preperation for a fight at 147......time will tell

Did he enter the ring heavier than normal in the Collazo fight or still at around 152-154

I just think that in the olden days, they used to say that fighters should stay away from the weights and not drink much water at all. But now we realise that weights are good in moderation and that water is no hindrance at all.

Obviously, Hatton's not going to be helped if he puts on 20 lbs of it and compaigns at Middleweight. But 4 or 5 is not going to do him any harm, and will make him a bit stronger -- besides which, he won't be concentrating on building muscle bulk, but rather on building muscle strength.

If he prepares properly, in fact, the extra weight will simply allow him to put in more energy during training, which should facilitate an increase in the intensity of his strength and cardio training and a decreased focus on losing weight -- especially if he starts some cardio right now, knowing he has the biggest fight of his life on his hands, and trys to get to 12-weeks-out with a reduced starting weight. It also means that he doesn't have to lose then put back on in quite such a drastic way either side of the weigh-in.

Whether it'll work out that way -- as I'm sure Kerry would want -- or whether Ricky'll do it more his way, is another matter.

HE weighed 160 apparently. Actually eating McDonalds and Chinese isn't that bad after draining your body for 12weeks to make weight. He needs to put allot of calories back into his system after draining himself. There are better way to do this but it isn't that bad. I can't see it taking a huge edge off stamina, its not like he did a Diego Corrales and ate a huge peanut butter sandwich miniutes before getting in with Mayweather

I didn't misinterpret a thing:
Hatton's plan for the Mayweather fight is to come in at the junior welterweight limit of 140, even if the bout is at welterweight
Hard to misinterpret something written clear as day.

okay sorry Matty it wasn't you who misinterpreted, it was the writer. Ray doesn't say Hatton wil weigh in at 140 or anything that would lead someone to believe that. Media Spin.

Guy, it's not an anti-Hatton piece, it's not a pro-Hatton piece, there's no need for spin, there isn't any spin. What we are presented is that on a radio, Ray Hatton stated Ricky will come in as a Light Welterweight...how does one put spin on that?
