Anyone else catch Jim on last night's episode of 'Still Game'?

It was quality stuff!! Didn't he say something along the lines of

"these 2 fellows goin' toe to toe!!"

I remember chatting to Jim Watt at ringside once when I was covering some show or other, and he was talking about Calzaghe's win over Lacy and how 'you dinnae get tae mannae nights like that, it's alwaes gaed to see the yanks getting bashed aboat."

Suddenly the urge to break into my Jim Watt impersonation became almost unbearable, it took an enormous amount of willpower to bite my lip and keep quiet.

I love Jim Watt's commentary, I know some people have problems with him, but for me, his voice is THE voice of world championship boxing.

Thinking about it, Jim must have been covering boxing pretty much since he retired, he's been at if for over 20 years now.

You should have said to Jim "I think he needs to drop a feint and draw a lead" and see what he replied.

I've always thought that Jim was good in the co-pilot's chair. He seemed to read the momentum swings better than most.

I agree, James. Jim Watt is the man. Always concise, articulate and usually accurate. Is always quick to spot when the course of a fight shows a subtle shift.

He also has a great voice for it as well. He usually as you say spots something early on, and seizes on it right away.

We all hammer on about Carpenter and Gutteridge, but has there been any better than Darke and Watt... I think not.

I think it's more like 25 years, if not a few years more. I am sure he may have done a little bit of TV work with Reg Gutteridge whilst still an active professional.

For me, Reg Gutteridge was one of the best, if not the best, commentators in history. Knew so much about boxing did Reg. Anyone read his biograpghy? Very good read indeed.

I'd second that Reg G. just had the perfect cadence in his voice for commentating. Rawling is a bit too monotone but does a good job.

Jim Watt is pissing hilarious in real life. He's a fine amateur magician and enjoys a glass of red wine when he broadcasts on SKY

Reg was great, but did waffle sometimes and occasionally didn't sound to enthusiastic. Like if Darke was commentating on Tyson vs Biggs, Darke would have said screeming "a huge right hand from Tyson sends Biggs to the canvas", Reg would say something like "here we go, got him".

Personally think Harry was the maestro of the play by play, mainly did it on his own (no colour commentator) and kept it very interesting.... but agree as a colour commentator no one can touch Jim, only Gill Clancy was in his league.

The fact that Jim sounds great with Jim Rosenthal, Reg Gutteridge, Ian Darke and Adam Smith... enhancing them all, speaks volumes. Often wondered how he would have sounded with Harry Carpenter.

Just kidding. I quite like Jim Watt, but the Gutteridge era will always be my favourite. As others have said, he had the perfect tone and cadence for commentating.

gutteridge and harry were great in there own ways. reg was understated and matter of fact, harry let the spectacle unfold, often not saying anything for long stretches of time - i like this style very much. jim likes to convey excitement but always draws on his great eye and experience of the subtle swings and changes in the action of a bout.
i dont think he gets it right every time - during hunter/molitor he stuck with hunters aggresion against molitors counters a little too long - but mostly he nails it.

Still Game is absolutely class. Jim did very well indeed, very good. He's the best analyst out there too.
