Can somebody tell me about Spinks-Qawi?

I've never seen Michael Spinks at light heavy but I have seen a little of Qawi. I can't imagine him being dominated at this weight near his prime. Was the Spinks fight close, or did Michael have his way with Qawi?

I saw that fight as it was broadcast live on network TV and have not seen it since. So I am going by old memory here. As I remember Braxton was competitive and was pressing the issue always moving forward. Spinks as usual boxed and countered very effectively and won most the rounds but did not handle Dwight without taking some good shots.

That's about how I figured it went. Braxton was short as hell for a light heavy so I figured Spinks would be able to neutralize him pretty well. But Braxton's chin was awesome and he could usually find a way to get inside and land. Even at cruiser against Holyfield.

Spinks fought cautiously, since Qawi was very dangerous and a great chin. Not even hurt by Holyfield. Spinks out-classed Qawi with cautious but effective boxing.

The fight was a little dissapointing. Quawi was expected to be more aggressive and force a slugfest. Spinks although quite cautious and respectful of Quawi landed a good shot somewhere in the early rounds and Quawi became more cautious in his aggresssion. Spinks won the fight with outside boxing and Quawi wasn't very effective. The decision was clearly for Spinks. Basically to much respect shown particularly by Quawi who obviously needed to force the fight more to the inside. That fight hurt Quawi in terms of his overall all time 175 lb divisional status IMO. Quawi was a very skilled buttkicking fighter during his day. TIP

TIP is exactly right. Compares a bit to Lewis-Tua. Spinks had real power at 175, made Qawi cautious. Ali, in comparison, not enough power to scare Frazier, made for a much better fight.
SPINKS/QWAI

Spinks started aggressively using his jab and counter hook and right hand. Qwai was countoring with a stiff jab, that he had even though he was a short 5'7". As the fight went on Spinks realized Qwai wasn't going anywhere and settled into a box and move mode, whereas Qwai began to press more and more but was never able to launch a substained attack. I also did'nt know which Spinks you were talking about Michael or Leon. A few years later when he was Cruiserwieght champ Qwal defened against Leon and dealt him a systematic beating ending with a 6th round tko.

i was talking about Michael v Qawi. Ironic that Leon had been the
heavyweight champ, and then gets taken apart by Qawi. Qawi gave Holyfield a very tought fight. Qawi was short, but with long arms, so he could jab. But Spinks' jinx made him cautious, and Spinks got a comfortable decision.
Spinks/Qawi.

I knew before the fight that spinks would be to big, agile, and powerful for qawi. Michael simply stayed on the outside and speared dwight with the jab, and literally padlocking him from coming inside.

terap...have you EVER seen a fight that wasn't either fixed or "questionable"? And this is from one who firmly believes that the great Harold Johnson really was given a poisoned orange, not faking it as a lot of writers have accused.

The Jimmy-Young Ali fight was legit.
So was the beating Jones gave Ali.
Harold Johnson told me that he ate at Lew Tendler's restauarant in Philly earlier that day and felt funny the rest of the day. In his dressing room he told his trainer he felt bad and the trainer said, "No, you're just nervous."
So, terap has seen two fights that were legitimate and on one of them his memory is shakey. I recently viewed the Jones-Ali fight and neither fighter recieved a beating.

Qawi stepped on his foot, and they had the audacity to say Spinks was knocked down.

Which fight are you reffering to?

Qawi was very good at rolling in under a right hand and coming back with a hook or right of his own. Spinks took that away by not throwing right hands

kojoe...in 1955 (before he won the title) johnson was in match against julio mederos. televised. johnson was acting strangely and either collapsed on his stool at the end of the first or second round or just appeared to be dizzy...can't recall exactly...but couldn't come out for the round. very very strange. in his dressing room he claimed he had eaten an orange that was apparently drugged. caused a lot of controversy and mystery which never was dispelled....but i think he was fined by the commision. one of the really weird boxing stories.....i'm afraid i don't know where to direct you for further details. this is just from memory. i saw the "fight" and vaaguely recall the follow up stories but that's about it.
the ring record book lists it as a koby mederos round 2.

Silkov, you are an Ali Shill of the lowest order filling this board with your garbage that you call knowledge, quite laughable.
Your 'greatest of all time' lost to a 7 fight novice in Spinks.
He lost to Jimmy Young who exposed Ali for what he was, a media creation.
Ali should have lost to Frazier in Manilla but that traitor Futch pulled Frazier out. That media darling Futch cut the necks of many of his fighters.
Go to it--halfwits. Clutter the site with your own personal spite.

Agree aout Spinks using a cautious / effecitve boxing style to Dec Qawi -
But as for Holyfield not even hurting Qawi - First I don't agree, Qawi was shaken twice in their first fight - And in their rematch a year later Holyfield TKO'd him in the 4th Rd -
