Hey guys

I really enjoy watching Bob Foster fight, even when he is on the receiveing end of some brutal beatings as a Heavyweight.

I am curious to know what your opionions are of him against the greats at 175.

Who do you think would beat him at that weight.

I personally think Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Roy Jones jr, James Toney and Michael Moorer.

What do you guys think?

I`d imagine Michael Moorer would fit the profile best of the names mentioned to beat Bob Foster...strong guy with frightening punch

Ezzard Charles would have a better than good chance with just about any lt-heavy.

Of the names mentioned I`d have thought the old mongoose would be the one I`d put Foster to get to first.

I would imagine that Moore and Foster would be a damned close fight, I just like the idea of Moore catching Foster late in the fight with some solid crosses after being out boxed early on. Could go anyone, but I just like Archie.

I pick Ezzard Charles to beat him...Also in a toe to toe war, that is if Bob decides to trade, I pick Matthew Saad Muhammad by KO

The rest of the light heavyweights to beat him? I do not see no one else.

I think the more intriguing question, tougher question, would be to ask what LHW during Foster's career could have definately beaten him? Had he not go into HW and after the Ali's and Frazier's, was there a LHW out there who could have gotten to him?

That's the real question.

John Conteh would have been his best opponent, but I think Foster would win a clear decision.

Outside of John Conteh, theres only one other LHW contender that I can remember who was up for a title shot and that was Jerry Evans....ranked #4 by the WBA, but retired before ever fighting for a title, due to his skin becoming a huge liability, cutting more and more easily.

Jerry was tough as they come, but good skin or bad skin, I think he would have lost a unaminous decision if not a late TKO to Foster.

Historically, Id give Sam Langford, Ezzard Charles, and Archie Moore a good chance of beating the peak Bob Foster at LHW and maybe Mike Spinks.
Conteh might have beat him in 1974 but Foster was past his best by then

Virgil Hill is not even in Foster's class. He would get spanked. Too fast? Foster had the faster and harder jab (Hill's best punch) . . I don't know what you are seeing.

I do see Moore, Charles, Tunney, Loughran, Johnson and a few other beating Foster. Bob was a great fighter but did reside over a generally weak era of light HWs

One matchup I think would have been fun is a prime Braddock vs Foster at 175. Foster is the rangier guy and quicker man but Braddock could punch as well and had a very good chin. I slide towards Foster by decision but it would have been interesting.

I agree with Granberry. Jack Dillon and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien would have a chance against Foster. They both beat some big men, who weren't bums, while they were under 175. Trains, planes and automobiles were slower in those days, but not fighters.

I only named Conteh because I was thinking only of Foster's contemporaries.

Besides Ahumada, who like Martin says beat him in the ring but not on the scorecards.. Foster was beaten at 175 lbs.. And that was accomplished by a gentleman named Mauro Mina

It was only Foster's 13th pro fight.

Now that you mention it, I'm surprised I haven't updated that into their records. I seem to remember it was something of a 4-5 point margin on all cards I'll have to take a look at the clippings i have.
