We just had a post on the villians in boxing. So how about the other side? Fighters irrespective of the their skills were real heros in their lives. I nominate Joe Louis with his dignity and fund raisng for the military during the WWII.

Come on guys surely there are fighters out there you think are good role models!

..one of the great memories of all time (mine) developes some blanks on rare occassions. i'm trying to think if the boxer who drowned while trying to save someone......this might have even been the second time..he tried....not drowned, which he did just once. the name rudell stritch hums around my brain cells, but i can't find him on box rec. i've written about him before but that was a long time ago. whatever, he certainly deserves the good guy appellation.

come on you guys....i know somebody here can come up with it.


tony zale was a good guy. spent many of his post-career years training and working with amateur boxers, many of whom were street guys headed for trouble. a quiet unassuming guy, much like decagon.

ezzard charles was one of the most decent men who ever lived. amazing how he handled the then year decimation that lateral sclerosis tortured him with ...but was a fine person even before he had to deal with this horror.

after archie moore survived that war with durelle....which he came back to win after a real battering....when he was interviewed after the fight the first thing he did during the post fight interview was to send a message to someone who was in bad health somewhere. fuzzy on the details, but buzzy watches this tape every day so maybe he can fill them in.

george sugar costner's post career acheivements would be a perfect example for anyone who has to deal with adversity.

Julio Cesar Chavez is practically like Hercules for Mexico and Mexican people.

I'd have to mention fighters like Lenny Mancini and George Carpentier who fought so bravely in wartime.

Oscar's a rapist now?

I'm pretty sure the only reason Oscar was down for rape was because she was 15 and he was 19. Personally I wouldn't go there, but it is not really unusual. If he were 22 and she 18, it wouldn't be weird at all.

Larry Holmes. He could have killed Ali but backed off.

You could say the same for Ali against Buster Mathis.

I would say, along with Ali; Patterson, Louis, Moore, Hagler, I guess Foreman in his later years, Chuvalo, Glen Johnson, Brewster seems like a nice guy during interviews, Mosley, Vazquez... there's a lot of examples.
