Boxing - National Anthems

In the UK no matter what the sport the anthems are not respected of the opposition.
Tonight at the Bernard Dunne fight did you notice the anthems were respected.
How refreshing, and thats coming from a Brit!!!!!!

Anyone remember sometimes when Ricky fought at the MEN he or the ring announcer asked the crowd to respect the anthem of the opponent. Problem is they had to be asked.
Good respect from the Irish crowd. Even after such a shit result for them.

the thing is, when you look at a Calzaghe-Lacy fight where an American says this title belongs to my country then not only are they hyping the fight but adding to an atmosphere of jingoism. Martinez had come over with little hype and few respected his record. It's not like he said my team are putting a big bet on me to win in the first round and that I'm going to bash him up like a crash dummy.

I hate booing but even in ireland youll get lunatics going mad if the British anthem go's up.....
Rugby fans in ireland will fully respect the British Anthem but say Footy or Boxing there will be booing left right and centre

Any other anthemn would be respected in Ireland but the hurt and resentment runs too deep for some (esp when pi55ed..

On another note, Pass was also singing along down the microphone to "is this the way to amarillo" - very very funny.

They have never played 'God Save the Queen' at Landsdowne road and if they won't play it there then there is no chance at Tolka Park, or Croke park home of Gaelic football.
No problem for me by the way, 'God save the queen' is an awful dirge.

What was Michael Pass doing there ? , Mike Goodhall was the announcer .

Thats not true at all.
God Save the Queen has not been played at Landsdowne road in my lifetime.
I'll let you google and find out for yourself instead of me looking up and posting links.

It has been played twice then, it is a well known fact that 'God save the queen' was never played at Landsdowne road, every five nations between England and Ireland at Landsdowne Road I ever watched, God save the queen was never played.

He really got into that Smokey song 'Alice' didn't he? I thought he was going to launch into the swearing version in centre ring.

To go to the topic of the thread I think we should be able to have national anthems without booing.
The atmosphere as unusual, it was not outright aggressive by any means but the sheer volume of support for Dunne was massive and Kiko must have thought, "Blimey!" at one or two points.
It was a bit pantomimic with the fans shouting lustily and without rancour perhaps thinking that, like in Panto, the end was going to be a happy one for them and the hero Dunne.
I'll send the photos over either tonight, or tomorrow

dude what are you talking about its been played EVERYTIME . I can only think you are putting the kettle on or something when its played fella.
Really i can gaurentee you God save the queen is played before every English rugby game anywhere. I dont miss em Im a rugby fanatic so just trust me on this.

Yeah, I remember it made the news bulletins when God Save the Queen was played for the first time at Croke Park this year. It was taken as a big gesture that the past was behind us.

but ti was the first time england had played there, so naturally it'd be the first time the anthem was played there. As for Lansdowne road, I never knew it wasnt played there... always thought it was!

it was the first time that Englandf played there correct, and they did play it at Lansdowne road, can you imagine the uproar if they refused, the RFU would cancel the game.

Whilst still on a rugby theme, out of respect for those players from Ulster of a unionist persuation The Soldier's Song is not sung.
Instead 'Ireland's Call' is used.
Political sensitivities over national anthemes run deep in Ireland, as most countries.
