Not really a toss up at all, Martinez would rightly be a massive favourite to knock Dunne out again.

I think it would be best to give Bernard time to work on his defence and get more of a look at Martinez before even considering a rematch .
I'm not sure the whole of Ireland would be with him , a surprising amount of people have claimed to be happy with him losing and that they 'knew' Martinez would win . Mind you those people weren't too vocal until after the fight , typical bandwagon , sing while we're winning type thing .

Whether Dunne worked out his defence or not, that chin of his would not hold up. He has had warning after warning - did you see how cocky he was when the ring announcer was introducing him!! - rematch in Sheffield or London will be no contest.

His chin is poor , but we don't really know how good Martinez is and if Dunne could be more compact and keep those hands up he might be able to outbox Martinez without shipping too many heavy clean punches .
That's why I'd like to see Martinez again before Dunne even thinks about a rematch , for all we know Martinez is shit because 86 seconds didn't tell us anything other than he can punch and finishes fairly well .

Do we know how good Martinez is - no not before this fight. But coming into it he has never lost in a relatively short amateur career, he has sparked a lot of his opponents albeit relatively unknown ones and he has just sparked the European Champion out in one round in front of thousands of the champions fans - enough to intimidate many boxers - although the Spaniard looked nervous - to do what he did on Saturday evening showed character.
Rematch - will happen - but its a no contest.

Why on earth would there be a rematch in Sheffield or London?

and who'll pay for it there? I'm told Martinez - Dunne was one of the richest european title fights in recent history with the cost easily surpassing that of most world title fights at super bantam.
A rematch won't be as epensive I suppose but probably not far off. How would Hobson make that pay in bloody Sheffield? Is there a huge boxing mad Irish and Spanish community there that I don't know about who will pack out the venue?
Boxing fans might like the idea of the likes of foreign fighters like Martinez and Munyai fighting regularly in the UK but if they can't sell a ticket to Joe Public they've no chance of establishing themselves here.

I'm on holiday in Cyprus just checking the results. Couldn't believe my eyes that Dunne got starched in 1 by Martinez! How did the ending come about?

Dunne came out looking to trade, Kiko twatted him. Dunne came up with a "Deer caught in the headlights" look in his eyes, seemed to protest it not being a knock down for some reason.
Action resumes, Kiko twats him again. Dunne gets up and spread out his arms, saying "Come on!" I think, can't believe what's happening to him.
Straight away gets twatted down a thrid time and the fight is stopped.
Kiko is a happy bunny.

been interesting to see how the fight would have gone had it been Dunne who was the away fighter.....he needed a more cagey start

Im thinking if Dunne can get by the first 3 rounds he'll have to fight the fight of his life to maybe do a TKO or somehow win on points....
My honest view is he dosnt make it past 3 and his career will be in tatters

Bit of a daft thread - Dunne got blitzed in one round and we are expected to believe it will be a toss up in a rematch
I would expect Dunne to last longer, but with his stamina issues and the fact he can be caught quite easily by shots - I don't see a different outcome.

I agree completely, a pointless thread.
I would give Dunne to round 3-4 before the blitz happens again.

According to this Dunne got over 200,000 sterling for the Martinez fight. Nice work for 86 seconds and some money for a european title fight at super bantam. I think Rafael Marquez only got around 125,000 sterling for his first fight with Vazquez so Dunne was certainly being well paid. Martinez got around 70,000 sterling.

Seems to me judging by that clip that Dunne held little respect for the Spaniard's reputation as a puncher and went out blazing trying to prove his own power and chin. Both let him down as Martinez caught him flush and starched Dunne in 1!
I think Dunne is now about 3 fights back and needs to regain the Euro title before any aspirations of a world title shot are realised. Thanks for the clip by the way. Was the fight exclusively on Setanta or did RTE show it as well?

Dunne would do miles better in a rematch - i reckon he could get to rounds two or even three!

It was shown on RTE and RTE had a Worldwide stream aswell so presumely Setanta had to pay RTE for the right to show it .

adamiw,
I have just read your post. whatever way Dunne fought Martinez he was going to get beaten mainly because of his chin

What a shocking fight it was to see. Last year, I was shocked twise.
First Felix Sturm KO'd by Javier Castillejo, second when Vilora lost lopsided decision to Omar.
This year, this is my first big surprise. After seen this fight for many times now, I came to the conclusion that Dunne's promoter made this huge mistake.
I understand boxing fans might not know who Martinez was before this fight. Most people did not know. But it is job of promoter, to find matchmaker who knows who is who. And clearly, they did horrible job.
You have to protect your fighter from fights like this, they should drop European title and fight some beatable, known, well ranked, overhyped.
But they chose, underrated puncher, who not many people know who he was. And now Dunne carrier pretty much over.
Rematch with Martinez will be the end for carrier of Dunne. I hope he will make enough money. But he should fire his matchmaker for sure. Dunne not the great fighter but so what there is plenty unbeaten fighters who not great but they have great matchmakers.

It was his mandatory so he didn't have any other choice but to fight him. Plus he was getting 200,000 sterling. Rafael Marquez hardly got half that to face Isreael Vazquez so it was good money for 86 seconds work!

He had choice to drop the belt. It is not like he had WBC belt.
Money is another thing, he might made enough already to not feel hungry for boxing fights anymore.
