Didn't see it, is he really skint at the moment or something, first he is marketing director for UFC shite and then he is on a 2 bit reality TV show without Gordon Ramzy who used to carry it.

I was called down to watch it once Barry was seen on it. Didn't show too much of him. I hope he comes across well in the rest of the series.

That is right Wayne works for UFC although a dare say 'Dollar Bill' Barry would do the same if they offered the cash.

In the intro Barry actually said that he doesn't take abuse well and he hoped he (himself) didn't lose his cool with him!

Met Ramsey at Hatton v Tszyu - he was actually a lot taller than I thought he would be. Seemed an alright bloke to be fair.

Hopefully his interest in boxing will mean he shows Bazza some respect, otherwise he might cop a left hook to the liver from the Clones Cyclone!

Ramsey didn't look very tall when I saw him, maybe 5'10.

I find Ramsey's hard man act a little bit much to stomach sometimes. FFing and blinding at people in a kitchen does not make you some sort of hard nut. Not claiming to be one myself, but I find the bullying attitude very annoying.

I also find it rather hilarious he spent so long lambasting chef's for appearing on TV shows, and now he's overtaken even Jamie Oliver as 'mr ubiquitous' when it comes to TV appearances, advertisements, shows, products etc.

He looked about 6'1/6'2 to me James - maybe he was wearing built up shoes??!

He is milking his celebrity status, there is no doubt about that!

I reckon Tyson would stand the abuse when the camera was rolling, but at some time or another, he'd probably have a little word with say, the chef, and ask him to stop.

Tyson's no idiot, and I reckon he would surprise a lot of people by how mellow he would be. But hey, if they were to take the piss too much, in an instant, they could regret it for a long time.

Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of the abuse/foul language is hyped & doen for the viewers, but sometimes, the chef's take it too far when abusing the contestants.

We're all human & can pny take so much.

I'm just chuckling to myself with the thought of Ramsey abusing Tyson . If Mike was in a bad mood, who knows, there could well bell Hell in Hell's Kitchen!

You are shown what they want you to see so that it makes good telly.

I know someone on the reality show in the jungle with Mike Read. All the competitors thought Read would win it because he was so good, coped so easily and kept spirits up, but that wasn't entertaining and he was the first voted out.

If someone like Rosie Boycott and Barry McGuigan who hardly featured last night were ace cooks and never got flustered it doesn't make good viewing.

Most people who watch Hells Kitchen want to see Abi Clancy driven back to showbiz sherbet by Marco's bullying and Jim Davidson have panic attacks

I once new a boxing promter who took the piss out of Tyson.

Tyson threatened him with sodomy and a flying lesson out of the fifth floor Dorchester hotel window.

The promoter was begging tearfully, please, mike, no, i beg you.

I saw Gordon Ramsey at Birmingham train station a few years back and what struck me was how ancient he looks. I was amazed at the time when I found he was still in his 30s. No doubt it's due to the stress...

I can't do with all of this bullying. What is more worrying is that people will grow up thinking that is how you manage people, when most people respond better to encouragement than abuse, especially when doing their best. And justifying it on the basis of results is moot because who's to say the same employees wouldn't respond better to being shown a bit of respect? Losing control of yourself doesn't demonstrate that you are a strong leader IMO.

I work in sports coaching and it's a similar thing there, where we expect to see coaches screaming and shouting.

I guess the rationale is that the strong survive, and you need people who can cope under pressure, as you say, the same approach is used in sports, and also in the armed forces where it's taken to even greater heights.

In the heat of the kitchen, or under fire, I guess there is no time to mollycoddle people, so you need to replicate battle stations during peace time.

I dare say it would cause far more damage than a left hook from the 'Clones Colossus' Kevin McBride...

It's a basic psychological technique. You strip someone down to breaking point, in this case you make them cry, or breakdown in some way.

Then the leader/chef/whatever builds them back up with encouragement. They go from being the bully to the saviour. They make it painful and then they make it better.

Chef's want a close bonded team with total loyalty to them.

It might not get the best out of them as individuals but it makes the team solid and feeds the chef's ego.

The only thing in defence of Ramsay is that he is over passionate about his food so he loses it if somebody sends shit food out under his name.

It's like any job. If you're a builder and you employ some young little nerks to do some plastering for example and it's shit. They will think 'it looks ok to me'. Then the boss will get a moaning call and it will reflect badly on the boss(as if he has done it himself) and it will harm future work.
Then watch the boss go loopy and rightfully so.

I was one of those nerks and it puts you on edge but it also makes you feel the importance of getting something right. For me this helped me learn a hell of a lot quicker, which helps both parties. If my boss said it was alright, I would have been average for year longer than I needed to be. The extra push makes you better in a much quicker timeframe.


Ramsay teachs calmly and expects people to pick it up as anybody else would too. If they burn one to start he will let them off but expects it to be picked up quickly.

Complaining is not a natural thing for Brits to do but I'd say if our food was crap we would say.

I agree that this is a valid technique but I would question whether someone like Ramsey is using this as a considered method or whether he just can't keep his temper and is actually losing control (my guess would be the latter).

In fairness to him, when doing his 'Kitchen Nightmares' you do see another side to him and he can be a very good mentor and gives opportunities to those that he feels deserve them.
