In an attempt to move away from the HWs how about a discussion and a peek at some 140 lb lists.

Here are the guys I think should be in the running for the greatest 140 fighter ever.

My standard answer to this question used to be Canzoneri because I considered him to be the greatest fighter to have claimed a title at the weight.

I'll try and put a top 10 together.

Of course... He's a real contender for top spot.

I don't think Whitaker, De La Hoya or Mayweather really qualify. Whitaker had one fight there, Oscar two, Mayweather three. Oscar had two nice wins there, but I don't think you can do any more than put him in the top 10 at 140, if that.

Anyway, its hard to say. I would go with either Ross, Benitez, Pryor or Chavez. Chavez is arguably the best ever in two weight classes, 130 and 140.

..any discussion of jr. welters brings out the worst in me..or maybe the best, dependant on how you feel about a certain title holder in this class.

....so..instead of that topic let me use this space to ask WHY IN THE HELL IS THIS FORMAT BACK AGAIN!!!!IT WAS ON BEFORE AND DISAPPEARED AND LIFE WAS WORTHWHILE AND FILLED WITH BEAUTY ONCE MORE...NOW THE MESS HAS RETURNED!!!!! GET THE DAMN THING OFF!!!

Do you guys really think Aaron Pryor was that bad?

I almost get the feeling that you're not telling us everything that you know on this subject!

I thought I would take a stab at a Top 10 List of Jr Welterweights. This was very difficult to do because the division didn't even exist for a few decades and many fighters have just used it as stepping stone between lightweight and welterweight. Anyway I took into consideration how long a fighter was actually in the division.

1. Barney Ross
2. Tony Canzoneri
3. Aaron Pryor
4. Julio Cesar Chavez
5. Wilfred Benitez
6. Nicolino Locche
7. Antonio Cervantes
8. Duilio Loi
9. Kosta Tszyu
10. Jack Kid Berg

I think it's a decent list, Alp.

What is odd is that there have been a few fighters, even in modern times who just leapfrogged this division. Duran and Mosely didn't bother to pick up titles on their way up to 147.

Yeah, the bigger money and the bigger fights are usually at Welterweight.

while i cannnot speak for boxbuzz....he has enough trouble trying to speak for himself...if i had NOT retired as stated, the answer would be yes..

I like this list for several reasons. I agree that Locche should be rated over Loi. I agree that Cervantes should be rated over Pryor. I would LOVE to see a Loche vs Chavez fight, and I suspect Loche would do to Chavez what Whitaker did to him. I also am glad to see Whitaker not included here. I think I'd take Canzoneri out as well. I think of them both in another weight class.

Chavez wouldn't touch Locche.

Man, even our own TzyuForever would be embarrassed by that assertion. Tszyu is a legit top-10 all-timer for the division, but, "best ever," just about finishes your credibility on this subject permanently. Locche & Benitez would've pulled Tszyu apart for every moment of every round, Pryor would eat him up down the stretch, & I'm not going to describe what a bodypuncher of Chavez's calibre would do to a fighter with Tszyu's notoriously wide-elbowed stance, because children read this board, & the results would be too brutal for anything other than an R-rating.

Pep as #2 all-time at 140? Good going. It was always going to take a lot to eclipse the stupidity of your first point of contention, but you were upto the task

LOL! Tszyu was amazing shhhhhh! NO Pep probably weighed 140 pounds at some point in his life.
