LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Muhammad Ali, three-time heavyweight boxing champion and one of the most recognized people in the world, is a nominee for this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Co-nominated with Ali is Peter Georgi, Ali's former senior humanitarian advisor.
The nomination is based on Ali's and Georgi's many years of effort to create the Children's General Assembly, a new United Nations-authorized organization that will allow children to promote the following:

...ali was within his legal rights by refusing to take part in an illegal war...and a draft which excluded the elite and disproportinately sent young black men to die in a part of the world in which we had no business interfering with.
....as for the peace prize....well, one does tend to get serene when one needs help in getting dressed and crossing the street.

Pope John Paul II got nominated, and he was a Nazi.
I know this really has nothing to do with boxing, but Pope John Paul II certainly wasn't a Nazi. Perhaps you are confusing him with Pope Pius XXII, who is sometime criticized for not speaking out against Hitler.

I don't really know too much about the lives of the popes prior to their being elected to the papacy, but I think you might be referring to Benedict XVI. He is German and was in the German military as a youth during World War II; he had no choice to my understanding. John Paul II was Polish, not sure that there was such a thing as a Polish Nazi, though I could be wrong. He certainly wasn't a Nazi sympathizer.
I don't know or particularly care if Ali wins a Nobel prize, I suppose it would be nice for him if he did. But I would say two things; a) helping kids has nothing to do with the draft, which is what this is apparently about b) I prefer the honesty of Ali's critics in this thread to Ali's dishonest critics in boxing-related threads. I'm pretty convinced that most of the criticism Ali gets of his boxing career is really just misplaced anger at Ali's personal life. You'd have to be a moron to say that Doug Jones beat him, but I think those who make that kind of claim do it because they just don't like Ali personally. And I can understand the criticism of his personal life, whether I agree with it or not (and I don't disagree with all of it). I wish people had the integrity to direct their criticism where they really mean it to go, his position on Vietnam, and perhaps his religion, and not on his boxing career. Personal dislike of a fighter should be kept out of how one judges a fighter's career. It has nothing to do with boxing.
And, that said, it was forty years ago, and Ali isn't in the top 100 of the worst personalities in boxing history.

Possibly. But only if George W Bush was banged up too.

Pope John Paul II was a member of the Nazi party. Pope Pius XXII did a hell of a lot more than not criticize the Nazis. He helped them escape.
Got a credible link for the claim that John Paul II was a member of the nazi party?
I know Pius XXII was a nazi sympathiser but never heard John Paul II was a member of the nazi party.

John Paul II was not a member of the Nazi party, in fact he was a Polish Catholic who was oppressed by the Nazi's when the University he attended was taken over by them and he was forced to get a job by the party. But I know the current Pope Benedict XVI was a member of the Nazi party, I read a lot about it in the news.

Quite ironic, but looking up wikipedia (I know, not a great source) it says that Benedict was drafted into the German military at 16. I wonder if some of Ali's critics feel Benedict did the right thing by complying?

(kidding, of course)
It also says that Benedict deserted in 1945. This conforms to my understanding of it, he was young and had no choice.

novelty goat - there was nothing for Ali to "do time"for . he met every legal guideline for his protesting being drafted. if there was anything illegal about it, it was his being banished from boxing while his legal battle was going on.
I was fired from my radio show because i gave advice to anyone in danger of being drafted on how to avoid it. most of my advice was legal information. some though was on ways to beat the physical. the final straw was in having a young guy come on to my show. he had just got his draft notice and he wanted to protest MY suggestions on protesting, but when i kept asking him why he was going he realized he didn't have an answer and the next time I heard from him was a letter from canada.
re: the off topic jews, popes and whoever. there are volumes written about this. many many volumes. they are the place to find information to help make up your own mind.....not a few paragraphs on a forum devoted to guys who wear trunks and punch each other in the nose.

No he shouldn't and nor should anybody else, a war against an impoverished people is immoral from the get go and all the more so when the world's richest country is sending soldiers out to burn peasant children with napalm.
Know why the Vietnam war ended when it did? because the government recieved commisioned reports stating that the army was weeks away from total collapse due to the GI movement. Which you have airbrushed from history. Learn your real history puppet, sift out the lies

Actually John Paul II was involved with the Polish resistance. He had a lot of faults, but Nazism was not one of them.

But don't you find the repeated connections between Nazi Germany and the Papacy suspicious?
I think you will find that Benny Boy was a member of the Hitler Youth Movement. This was the looney outfit that replaced the Boy Scouts under Herr One-Knacker. An old carpenter I knew admitted to having been a member, but said he had no choice. It was join up or be locked up.

And how about Arafart the terrorist getting the Nobel PEACE Prize?
That made the Nobel Prize a joke.

Don't post racist garbage, Jaclem.
More whites than blacks were killed in Vietnam.
Tell us about the heroes of the Jena 6 next.
Six of them attacked one non-black kid and kicked his head head in.
Someone will have to explain to me sometime why that makes them heroes.

Everyone helped Nazi war criminals escape prosecution, most of the agencies you could imagine, or google, helped. Sometimes because they paid in money or other times because they paid in skills. I am pretty sure John Paul or Bennie had nothing to do with that.
You said John Paul was a Nazi, you got it wrong. Get over it.
Good posts, Terry.
