The new British Masters Champion.

For once the Welshman had some decent notice for a fight fighting over his preferred longer distance, he upset the odds by beating Jon Jo Finnegan in his back yard.

I also read the report on BBN and can only imagine the local reporter was influenced by Finnegan's massive support in his reading of the fight.

Mark Phillips won and won well, almost getting the local man out of there in the eighth.

He joins another tough journeyman in Billy Smith who also recently won a belt, to cap a fine career, where the the ex Welsh amateur champ has taken short notice fights away from home on a regular basis

Thats him, coincidently his brother got man of the match against Japan in the world cup the night before

I was that reporter and wasn’t influenced by the pro-Finnegan crowd; it’s just how i scored it. Errol Johnson, Jonjo's trainer, thought it was a draw, yet Andy Whittle and a couple of other people i spoke to thought Finnegan just nicked it.

All down to interpretation at the end of the day.

I am happy for Phillips, however, and i thought he bossed the second half of the fight quite clearly. I had Jonjo winning the first five, although you could have probably given Mark the fourth, and then Mark took over well, as im sure you know. I scored the last a draw when maybe it should have gone to the Welshman.

It was easily the best I’ve seen Mark box.

Well done to Mark - I've seen him on the wrong end of a few one-sided affairs so nice to see him get something for once.

I still think Jonjo won but, in hindsight, my scoring was probably a little wide as Phillips was the boss in the latter rounds.

I still don't see how you think Finnegan won even with your revised scoring.

You stated you gave the 1st 5 rounds to your man(even though you said you could have scored the 4th to Phillips) and the Welshman bossed the second half of the fight quite clearly.

Those are your words and you are still saying you scored it to Finnegan, this is coming from a man who scored it by 3 rounds to the Burton fighter in his BBN report, and now says it was closer but the home fighter still won it.

Always pleased to see the likes of Phillips get something back from boxing after playing the opponent for fight after fight.

I wondered after seeing Phillips absolutely flattened by Dan Guthrie if he'd ever want to get back in a ring again. Clearly the guy's got a lot of courage.
