bit surprised, but he's got nowhere to go but fighting on the domestic lower tier. hope he made some csh along the way, although i doubt enough to retire on.

Something not right about Scott on Saturday.
Firstly he turned up over 3 hours late for the weigh in on Friday and then stayed with family over 2 hours from the venue.
Really nice people to deal with.

What is more sad is that he could have got a seriously big pay day to fight Audley. Maybe he didn;t fancy it or maybe he was advised to give it a swerve. Whatever, he wound up losing to Danny Willaims for what we can safely assume was a smaller purse. Now, looking disinterested, he sleep walks to defeat against John Dermott, who had perhaps the best fight of his career, and quits the game. Scott is better than that, and I hope he gives it another go.

Yeah, first thing I thought of was the payday he lost out on.
You have to wonder if it took his desire away somewhat when he fought Williams for much less.
Anyway, seems he is doing ok away from boxing, so if his head isn't in the game, the best thing he can do is get out

If he's making a success of his life outside of boxing, and his heart is no longer in the sport, then fair enough.
I was a bit surprised, though. Despite the defeat to Williams, I thought he showed some positives and would come back better for it. He was, after all, even at 4-4 on the cards IMO when the finish came. That's not bad at all, when you consider the levels.
At 30, he's also by far the youngest title-calibre heavyweight in Britain so I could easily have seen him achieving some more.
But yeah, if his heart's not in it, then it's safer to bow out. Good luck to him.

Maybe his wife should turn pro? Gammer came on early on the Harrison vs. Williams 1 bill and the security guard weren't letting them straight in, she told him quite clearly what she was going to do to him if she didn't get in, the huge security guard shat himself and let all the Gammer clan straight passed. Pisse myself laughing but needless to say stayed well away from her for the rest of the night!

Former British heavyweight champion Scott Gammer has called it quits after a disappoining loss to blubbery Essex man John McDermott in Sheffield over the weekend. Gammer, having his first fight since losing his British title to Danny Williams, was outscored in a drab 10-rounder on the Clinton Woods-Julio Cesar Gonzalez bill.
The fire looked to have burned out.
A small heavyweight by today's standards, and a baby for the weight at 30, Gammer never really pushed on after seizing the Lonsdale Belt in June last year with a nine-round stoppage of Chesterfield's useful Mark Krence in front of 1600 noisy fans at Carmarthen Showground. It was his second stoppage of Krence and Gammer retained with a clear decision over gritty Londoner Micky Steeds in Port Talbot in October, a man he had outscored over six in 2005. He seemed to be going round in circles but a defence against the aging Williams in Neath in March was a golden chance for Scott to seal bigger fights and paydays, if he came through. He didn't. The man from Pembroke Dock in South Wales gave it a good go but Williams proved too heavy-handed and experienced and took away his belt in the ninth.
He also took away Gammer's unbeaten record after 18 fights.
Burly Gammer turned pro five years ago with a string of first-round wins (four in his first five fights) but was then held to a six-round draw by Lithuania's Mendauga Kulikauskas in Bridgend in November 2003, a result that looked poor result till southpaw Kulikauskas floored unbeaten Roman Greenberg, busted up Krence and stopped Herbie Hide (cuts) in his next three outings.
Gammer reeled off 11 straight wins, including those doubles over Krence and Steeds. but a heavy knockdown at the hands of Armenian southpaw Suren Kalachyan in London's ExCel Arena in December 2005 was a hint of things to come. Gammer beat the count in the second round but barely survived to the bell and looked unsteady all the way through. He got home by one point (57-56).
Scott had a nose that leaked in every fight, incidentally.
You know, the warm, smiling father-of-two could fight at his level. He had strength, workrate, handspeed, boxing skills and a left hook known as "The Hammer", and was one of those proud Welsh fighters who didn't look for an easy way out (his shorts were designed in the colours of the Welsh flag). He played prop for Dyfed Schools and took up boxing inspired by the stories of dad Ralph, a handy amateur heavyweight, but later struggled to fit in the sport with his day - and night - jobs. Gammer works as a labourer while doing shifts as a bouncer. "Sometimes it seems there's not enough hours in a day," he admits.
He was the first British heavyweight champ from Wales since Newport's Dave "Bomber" Pearce in 1983. Pearce sadly passed away in 2000.

I wouldn't of said that Gammer had a suspect chin Bennie. Its heavyweights and its possible to get knocked down at some point in a career. Danny Williams caught him with some big punches early on and if Gammers chin was suspect he'd have fallen apart sooner that night.
Maybe with his work commitments and having a young family , it dimmed his desire, at least he can look back and say he was British Heavyweight Champion, which is no bad thing to be able to tell your grandkids in the future.

Yes, now I think of it, Kalachyan was the first man ever to put Gammer down.

I agree, Gammers' chin is sound. Kevin Evans gave him one or two beatings in the amateurs but he stood up firm.
True desire has always been a problem for him, I was actually told by a relative who works in the building with Gammer that often when the going gets tough, Scott goes away. He's had to on many occasion go looking for him and often Scott says "oh its too hard" etc. So I think the Williams defeat was possibly the first realisation for him just how hard the game is.

British HW title has been a mess for a while to be honnest, would be nice if Haye stops off to beat them all up on his way to challenging for the world belt. Taking out a couple of british fighters particularly Skelton or Sprott who have okay reputations in Europe would be good for him and good for the title.
YOu never know he mite fancy it having never won a longsdale belt at cruzer

i dont think that mc dermort is bad it,s just his head that gets to him remember that he,s an ABA champion after only about 8 fights so please give him credit geeeeeeeezzzzzzz
i remember garry delaney telling me that mc dermott is the most talanted heavyweight this country has had since cooper and he just needs to get his head right and he.ll be british champion

To be fair he is a talented fighter, a talented middleweight trapped in a heavyweights body.

He's probably better than he's given credit for, but that ^^ comment!!
Do I need to list the post-Cooper heavies to show how absurd it is?
If Delaney's comment had been recorded, he could have used it as evidence of insanity to get off the murder rap.

McDermott needs to get himself in shape. All the talent in the world can't make up for a severe lack of discipline. I remember when McGuigan was laying into him on TV after McDermott claimed he did 5 miles of roadwork every day!

Yeah, McGuigan was funny that time!
I think a few are overating old Ronald McDonald here..... His chin aint great either and his power aint anything much. Gammer was awful.

never rated McDerrmot that bad. I think he was shocked when floored the first time by Skelton, and panicked. He's improved since mentally, and John has a very good lab, and a sharp right hand. Can still have a chance of being british chaos.

If he's the most talented Heavy since cooper then im going to get on the juice and get myself a licence. IMO the kids an area level fighter, at best. Jesus we need a HW hope.... Scott Belshaw needs to speed his recovery up (ha ha - hoe its going well scott) as I believe he can clean up at Brit level, if not further.

from what i've seen of Belshaw, he's got power, but is wide open. He has alot of work to do. I can't see him getting above british level. And i'd be slightly surprised if he gets that far.

I don't need to get on the juice to get a body like McDermott. I've already got one, but I am many years older and not a professional sportsman!
