cant remember who it was who pioneered the old trick of sparring whilst holding an orange under your chin, thus ensuring that the chin stayed down and not 'on the washing line' !!

can anyone enlighten me as i think this is what the likes of amir khan and concepcion need to do. bollocks to modern methods of training, lets get back to the good old fashioned cheap as chips basics.

I think that Aussie lad Michael Hutchence tried this but it went a bit wrong.

i did not realise he was an aussie, but i do remember paula yates saying he was quite big 'down under' ...

Some of the juniors in our gym shadow box using a tennis ball under the chin, some do bag work too. Probably not as feasible sparring.

Good point though, they both seem to raise their chin when throwing and thats when they get caught...if its made a finest grade China like Martins then then doesnt really help your career

I seem to remember them trying with a sponge with Scrap Iron Ryan.

scrap iron ryan.....that guy used to box when i was a kid, i remember he wasn't the best in the world but he must have done ok cos he was on tv a few times in that cap.

what was his weight and what did he win, anyone? was he a british champ? and does anyone know how he panned out? good luck to him anyway.

I saw a picture of Howard Rainey holdng him up on his shoulders, so I assume he won the British as to my knowledge the English title is quite new isn't it - or am I completely wrong with the last part?

He was a British champ at l/welter, beating Ross Hale in a round, also picked up one of these trinket inter continentals, but was never the same after the Thaxton KO.
Moved up to welter and had a couple more shots at the Brit title but he fell short.
He wasn't the most talented, but he was a puncher, very strong and awkward

didn't Bomber Graham used to stand on one side of a piece of newspaper and get blokes in the pub try to punch im and slip the punches.
