Eubank in a Boxing Weekly in Jan 89..!

by Greg Nicholas
He's just taken a fight against Simon Collins on 6 days notice despite being on the Benn undercard against LOGAN just 8 days after that..

"I need to fight, largely because I don't have any money. But I only want the right kind of money. Also it's a matter of shaking off ring rust.

"I refuse to fight for certain managers and promoters."

He also gives his controversial views on the sport.. "Up til lately it's been a game, but now my goal is to go all the way to the top, become a millionaire and get out at 25 without using certain and managers and promoters.

"All the funs gone out of it because it's now a matter of setting standards."

He said if he lost twice he'd retire there and then, even if they were against Logan and Johnny Melfah in the following 7 weeks..!

He was saying how he planned to do a better job on Melfah than Herol Graham did to show he's serious. He didn't even acknowledge Logan! (The writers gave him no chance against Logan..)

He wouldn't fight for the British title because he felt Graham would be too experienced for him..

He said he'd be fighting Benn in May for the Commonwealth title and refused a box-off with Michael Watson because "he's not worthy, I'm the man going to the top, Benn is the one I need and as soon as possible to get public on my side. I'd take that man to the classroom, it's plain to see" (The writers gave him NO chance against Benn..)

Eubank's then manager, a Brighton garage owner called Keith Miles, insists Eubank would beat Benn with his footwork and fininshing..

Eubank said you could bet your house on him winning a world title in 1990.. "and do, please do, being prosperous is convenient, poverty is not for me and neither should it be for you, one should take chances but this would be a bet in stone"..

Eubank was laughed off..

He said he wouldn't fight Nunn down the line because "there is a system for getting on in boxing - you don't fight a southpaw, anyone over 6 foot or face an unbeaten record".. wouldn't fight Barkley because he wouldn't be right mentally due to Barkley coming from South Bronx.. and wouldn't fight Duran because he wouldn't be right mentally with Duran being a living legend and former lightweight.. he expected Kalambay and McCallum to be at the end of the road in 1990 if they got by Nunn and Graham and others and he'd either fight them, fight for a vacant world crown or fight a new champion.. he'd face Graham before Nunn..

They were looking at the vacant European title if he got by Benn, but would make Commonwealth defences if he had to.. he'd fight top 10 Americans after the European but would make European defences if he had to.. because he wanted to be fighting every 6 weeks without fail..!

He also said "there's not a thing I can't do. I can box, I can punch, I can fight when I have to. I can move, I can dance. I can speed it up or slow it down. I can catch a jab, slip a punch or sustain a punch. Logan can't jab as well as I can and that's the starting point"

Of Logan's WBC #16 rating he says "it's of no significance because I will be 17 rungs above that"

Nice extract, what a character Eubank was. Seems so old school now - the fight every 6 weeks mentality. Now it's every six months and he knew how to sell tickets did Eubank, turn up and look like a complete tw*t!

Even back then his ramblings were disjointed and erratic. I wonder if he has some sort of mental condition, because his mouth seems unable to keep up with his mind at times, I think Eubank maybe has some sort of social communication disorder, or maybe he has Attention Defecit more likely.

When I was reading your post was thinking ADHD myself. He certainly isn't quite right!

Actually this was in Boxing News, they asked Benn about the worlds leading middleweights in one of the previous editions, I remember (I remember Benn said he'd knock out Hearns for sure)

Yeah, it's the way his statements are all disjointed, and indeed are to this day. He seems to utter statements which are totally unrelated to one another, as if they made sense as part of a whole. He is also a terrific showoff, and seemingly very impulsive, all classic characteristics of a certain type of attention defecit hyperactivity disorder.

Give it up with the psycho babble. He's just eccentric. And is bright enough to know how to play to the camera's.

And I was very interested to hear his honesty on Nunn, Graham etc.

It's not psychobabble, Chris' personality has all the classic signs of someone suffering from the condition. It's nothing to do with psychology, it's brain chemistry, some people's brains just work in different ways.

As for being able to focus during fights, well, there were long spells of fights where Chris would go off the boil, and it was generally when he was under heavy fire that he would fight with the most intense focus.

I'm not knocking Chris, I just find his strange personality quite interesting, and wonder whether he does have some sort of hardwiring problem with his brain.

ADD is very common. In fact, I suspect I suffer from it myself.

He's obsessive, compulsive, impulsive and has many complexes such as inferiority, superiority etc. He is also a notorious attention seeker and despises being disrespected.

It's not rocket science that the guy is and always has been mentally ill when you consider his background is that of SE London council estate/South Bronx ghetto yet he dressed and spoke like he was from the silver spoon society, country mansion and all that and probably would have killed himself if he didn't 'make it' in boxing.

Apparently his parents were never around growing up, and his brothers treated him like dirt. This explains a lot.

What a lot of B/S.

Mentally ill. brothers treated him like dirt, Parents? What are you talking about.

Don't know about the parents shit, I've not read his autobiography.

I wouldn't go so far as to say mentally Ill, but he definetly has a very bizzare personality. Of course it could all be a confection on his part, but I suspect there's a lot more to it than that.

to paraphrase the wonderful peter cook "he's self obsessed, greedy, arrogant, rude and dishonest. all in all a perfectly normal, rounded human
being!"
