GOMEZ/JOHANNESON & FEWKES/REID

Two intriguing fights for me these.

When Gomez/Johanneson was first made I immediately fancied Carl to starch Michael early doors and he may still do but the closer it gets the more I lean towards Michael.

Johanneson really was like a rabbit in the headlights last time and it was clear that Kirakosyan had got inside his head just by beating him the first time, even though Carl must have been given added confidence by his taking control of the British scene it did not seem to be anywhere near enough for him to fight any sort of fight.

Now whilst Kirakosyan is above Gomez now despite there earlier encounter one thing the Manchester man has in spades is front and I can see him being so inside Johanneson's head that he climbs all over him from the first bell and Carl does his pacifist impression which he did against Kirakosyan, where he barely threw a punch.

If he tries to box sensibly against Gomez I think that is a recipe for disaster he needs to meet fire with fire because if he lands with his bombs I don't think Michael can take more than a couple before he's down and quite probably out.

So quite incredibly I think Gomez before half way in this one.

-------------

Fewkes was impressive agaisnt Tontchev but I thought he was troubled late on and if Tontchev hurt him Reid certainly can. John will need to be awake for the whole fight here because Reid can punch but I think he will be and therefore go for him to win a wide points decision.

Any views anyone?

Is that Gary Reid? Then a solid step for Fewkes, Reid has experience and is a good body puncher who always gives a good account of himself.

As for the main event, Johanneson is hit and miss, just when you think he is en route to world domination he goes and let's you down badly. However, Gomez is a faded force and if he indeed beats Carl then Carl needs to pack up.

Some good views there Globalbox.

My take on Johanneson-Gomez.... It doesn't sound as though Johanneson has got it together behind closed doors where in contrast the word is Gomez has had an excellent camp and knows its his last chance.

Johanneson was badly knocked out only 3 months ago. His confidence will have been knocked and he looked extremely fragile. He's previously looked a class above at domestic level but neither Billy Corcoran, Femi Fehintola and Ricky Burns are noted punchers. Gomez hits harder than all three.

I think this fight could come down to who lands first and also who has the better chin. I think Gomez may have the edge in both departments here, even though Gomez himself would appear to be very shopworn. My prediction is that Gomez will win this inside 3 rounds.

Fewkes-Reid

Totally agree with you, he was really wobbled by Tontchev in the seventh round. Reid won't have to go looking for Fewkes so this could be very interesting. In patches Fewkes looks very good, mixes his attacks up well, excellent workrate and always looks to have the last word in the exchanges. He's also beaten 3 decent fighters lately in Scott Hayward, Martin Watson and Tontchev.

Fewkes' problem though is that he lacks power and invariably has to take one to land one. I'll go for Fewkes to squeeze home on points (its over 8) but he may have to come through a crisis.

Frank Maloney isn't feeding Fewkes any soft touches - refreshing but slightly surprising. Fewkes is a big ticket seller and is capable of attracting excellent crowds in Sheffield. Maloney could have selected far easier opponents than Reid.

Two great matches though.

Have mentioned Reid as an acceptable opponent for Khan over the past 6 months or so, so i'm very impressed Fewkes is taking him on. Like you say Ben, he certainly isn't being given an easy ride in the slightest. Over 8 I think John will sneak out a victory but with some rough moments. Does anyone know if this is at lightwelter or lightweight?

Gomez v Johanneson just has too many ifs and buts about it. The more I think about it the more I see Gomez taking Carl out early to mid but who knows.

I'm picking Fewkes to either win clearly or on a late stoppage with body shots.

As for Gomez/Johanneson , 6 months ago i'd have said a definate win for Carl, but since then he's suffered a bad KO, and he seems to have some problems outside of the ring. Not training correctly for the Kirosan match either. Gomez hasn't looked great in his comeback, but i think if he avoids Carls big shots in the first couple of rounds then he get the win.

If i was in Carls corner i'd be telling him to go for Gomez's body, as he was troubled alot there in his last fight.

i am torn on this one, how much does Gomez have left. Can Carl come back after his beating only a few months back. How is he training, the ingles are not in his corner this time. I think soneone will win a one sided fight, i dont know who thou.

OH BROTHER - WHAT KIND OF A POST IS THAT - SOMEONE WILL WIN EASILY EXCEPT I DONT KNOW WHO - BASICALLY THAT IS LIKE SAYING I HAVE AN OPINION BUT I DONT.
TAKE NOTE, AND NO DISRESPECT TO EITHER BOXER - ( I HAVE SEEN CARL VARIOUS TIMES AND GOMEZ NEVER, ALTHOUGH I HAVE READ VERY MUCH ABOUT HIM) - CARL BELTS MICHAEL OUT OF THERE , DESPITE A VALIANT EFFORT BY THE WARRIOR THAT IS MICHAEL GOMEZ.
GOMEZ HAS FAILED TO IMPRESS AGAINST A FEW JOURNEYMEN IN THE COMEBACK - COMPARE THAT TO CARL WHO HAS BEEN WHUPPED BY EUROPES FINEST...........DOES ANYONE REALLY (I'D USE CAPITALS HERE BUT I ALREADY AM !) CARL JOHANNESON - A WARRIOR ALSO - IS GONNA TURN UP FOR ANOTHER BATTERING LIKE THE LAST TIME...........DO ME A FAVOUR.
CARL TO WIN ON PTS, IF NOT INSIDE.......OTHER POSTERS, HAVE A WORD WITH YOURSELVES.

PS. IF I'M WRONG, WHICH NEVER HAPPENS, COME BACK, AND BY ALL MEANS RUN MY SORRY ASS RIGHT OFF THIS FORUM FOREVER !!

EXCEPT I WON'T BE WRONG :box: :box: :box: :box:

It looks like Gomez is really up for this one and i havent seen him like that for a long long time. Obviously no fighter is ever gonna say they dont fancy themselves to win but Gomez seems genuine and if hes fit and training the way reports say he is in the gym then he knocks Johannesson out.

As for Fewkes, i havent seen a lot of him but from what i have he looks like a fantastic prospect, although his record suggests hes not much of a puncher. He should get a convincing win against Reid

I cant see how the fight goes past six rounds myself. If Johanneson is hitting Gomez enough to take a point win the effects wil hve Michael down and out long before the final bell. The weigh in today will be interesting see how Johanneson deals with Gomez during the head to head.

I honestly think that Gary can beat Fewkes.

Fewkes has the ability to outbox Gary but his tendency to get involved could well be his undoing. I don’t think he has the power to keep Gary off him for very long, Dean Hickman may be fragile but he hits harder than Fewkes and couldn't keep him off in their rematch earlier in the year.

If Fewkes can keep Gary on the outside – like Nigel Wright did at the tail-end of last year – then he should convincingly outpoint the stumpy Stoke man. But going to war with Reid is suicide.

Either way, it’s an excellent step-up for Fewkes - going in with someone who went the distance with Ajose Olusegun in a Commonwealth title challenge last time out.

As for the main event, Johanneson to halt a typically brave Gomez within five.

Tom Podmore.

Johanneson/Gomez is a weird fight: a can't miss matchup featuring two fighters who MIGHT be damaged goods. We're just not sure who it is.

Gomez seems back from the dead, but that's only outside the ring ( in a real fight ), where he's looked great.
As for actually fighting, well by all accounts he's been looking not too fantastic.

Just 5 minutes ago I was thinking Gomez might ambush a shaky opponent for an unlikely early win.

But.....logic takes over, and says that Carl covers up, rides out the storm, then proves the Gomez comeback a mirage.

Johanneson KO5

I had as it happens which is why I made a tit of myself with the post - apols! I'll have to keep off the computer next time!
I personally just find it a bit exasperating that Johanneson is getting written off by seemingly that many people on the back of that defeat.

No worries mate, i've done the same thing in the past, go out watch the football get pissed, then think its a good idea to post on a forum :TU:

As for Carl i'm more concerned he's got his head right for this one, he seemed distracted and not focused against Kirosan, which led to a disaster for him.
He needs to be right to face Gomez

I'm really pleased the Gomez-Johanneson fight is coming off... Two strong aggressive guys who have been at times shocking defensively. Can't fail to be a good fight, can it really?

I'd like to offer a great big round of applause for the respective camps. I know Johanneson has just been splattered again by Kirakosyan, but taking on Gomez on the first fight back shows some nads, doesn't it?

Any news/piccies of the weigh-in?

I love this fight thouh neither are going to go near world class.

Both a bit shot, both very hard to miss, both gutsy and both good puchers.

This won't go the distance.

Didn't Gomez struggle with Danny Thorpe In one of his comeback fights?

“I'll be sat there afterwards with my family and the British title. I'll only get up to nip off and piss up some blood. I can't wait.”
This Is a quote from Terry D's BBN article, does this mean Johannesson will win then.

from what i have read it seems like Gomez boxed to a higher level than Johanneson when he was in his prime, however I think Johanneson is favourite here as he's younger and been more active lately.
I don't reckon the Kirakosyan fight will be that big a factor to be honest (not a negative one anyway) I expect Carl to have got himself better prepared this time.
As for Fewkes- Reid I see Fewkes a points winner there as he has more skill and movement then Reid, which is not to say it will be one-sided.

The Gomez fight is all I can think about at the moment...roll on 9 o clock!!

Mike is making all the right noises, even commenting on how bad he looked in sparring aginst Morris and Crolla..hes in great shape..

Is he fagile? God only knows!

As for Carl hes coming of an absolute caning and tbh hasnt had that much time off..yep Leva hits hard but something wasnt right and from rumours on here things still arent..

If Mike isnt shot he will KO him in 5
