Azzaoui passes up shot at cruiserweight title
JIM MAHONEY - Sunday News | Sunday, 14 October 2007

Kiwi based boxer Mohamed Azzaoui has turned down a shot at a world title.

The World Boxing Association's No 8-ranked cruiserweight was offered a contract to fight World Boxing Organisation champion Enzo Maccarinelli if he got through his bout today against Henry Saenz at the Khodynka Ice Palace, Moscow.

But Azzaoui's handlers have turned it down.

"We'd rather sit it out and wait to fight the winner of (Virgil) Hill and (Firat) Arslan," matchmaker and manager John Glozier told me from Moscow.

Glozier, who is working with Azzaoui's team in the buildup to today's bout on the Evander Holyfield-Sultan Ibragimov undercard, said the World Boxing Association belt Hill and Arslan are scrapping for had a higher value and the contract on offer was flawed.

Maccarinelli's manager, notorious British fight promoter allegedly, had wanted to sign Azzaoui provided he won today's fight. If he beat Maccarinelli, Warren would have had exclusive rights to the Kiwi fighter for his next six bouts.

Glozier said today's match, to be shown live on Maori TV, was far from in the bag.

"Saenz isn't a skilled fighter but he really wants to win this one, " he said.

"We've heard he's going to come out swinging and try to get the KO."

Seems like he was in SN mind for a good while, on the plus side he won almost 200 out of 210 amateur fights and held the Algerian heavyweight title amateur wise for 5 years but went out in the Olympics early doors in 2000, Never seen him, no ideas about him, apparently he does not use the full weight at Crusier may come in a bit light as it slows him down at the new weight.

If he can take a shot might be ok for a few rounds and I suppose at this late notice its tough to get much but it seems like we all knew before the powers that be announced it that Sellers was off, and with Ding around at least we could have had a real barney for a couple of rounds.

Still Saturday will tell us if its a doddle of a fight or not, just got back from a couple of days away and I find Rees is off the bill as well apparently.

:o :o

I find it amusing that Frank wants Enzo to fight someone leagues below him, yet still insists on options on his next 6 fights if he loses, they may as well scrap Enzos fight, because another Gunn type opponent just makes Enzo, Frank and British boxing look ridiculous

Wonder If my hope that he will fight Ding can be reawakened then?

FW and his fornicating options spoil lots of decent match ups, come on warren, why not have some faith for once in your fighters..

This is bloody ridiculous. And Warren has the gall to say that David Haye is running scared of Enzo.

This was a couple of weeks ago guys, he has not taken the fight... The offer must have changed substantialy.

Why not have a non-title match with Lee Swaby.

JMM is #1 surly. I think the most disgusting thing about that was that he was waiting around for the WBA joke title, that super champ stuff is such bullshit.

Azzaoui is much better than "another Gunn type opponent". Wilson or even Calloway would have been better, but at late notice, this is OK.

Maybe so, but theres no way he should be contesting world titles (at this stage of his career)

Hopefully Enzo takes care of business, as he can be a pleasure to watch. Shame about the opponent situation. For Enzo's sake I hope the faffing about doesn't make him look really, realy bad on HBO, as a decent late notice foe can bring all kinds of awkwardness. For FWank's sake, I almsot hope it does go wrong, because this guy's been talking about a WBO-IBF unification - which I believe he never intended to make - & now it comes to all this...

If he has been ruled out, I'll be fcked off as we were originally gonna have Rees v Salida and Macca v Cunnigham as support, now we get no Ress or Macca. How does he expect people to make indoor records for his fighters when only one of them is challenging/defending a world title?!?!?!

(Allegedly) What a cck!

I presume you mean has now taken the fight Razor? I thought they had circled an e-mail revealing the Macarinelli press announcement and then circled another saying it was cancelled. Wish i has taken the time to read it now.

The above makes Warren & Maccarinelli a laughing stock in my opinion. Why does Warren want Enzo to figth a guy who is below the pecking order, yet still have options on the opponent should he pull off an upset & beat Maccarinelli?

Seems to me that Warren is not too confident in Enzo. Really & truly, what other reason could there be for him wanting options on Enzo's opponents?

No wonder Haye-Maccarinelli did not happen; Haye would have had to probably sign the remainder of his boxing career away to Warren & that was not going happen. Not a chance!

So fights still on by the sounds of it...and like everyone else I've never heard of him either. A non puncher with a peachy looking record is a Frank fav.

There's NO WAY he wants Enzo in a risky fight, not when there's a chance King Joe might lose that night.

Best you can say about this guy was he was a good amateur??

It's a joke of a fight in my view, just like choosing Bobby Gunn as an opponent for Maccarinelli was a joke. Yes, Enzo hits hard, but I want to see him in the ring with fighters like Haye, Bell, Mormeck, Cunnigham etc.

If Maccarinelli truly believes he's that good, he needs to show it against guys mentioned above, fighters in the same calibre etc.

It's pretty standard practice. He even had an options agreement in place with Bobby Gunn!

May of well have given Rees and Macca non-title fights, give them a bit of a payday, and then at least Warren can say he wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyones eyes

Won't happen as The Herbie poses a real threat to Maccarinelli. Allegedly Warren doesn't want Enzo fighting anyone remotely capable of beating him.

Anyway, if negotiations were going on for a bout between Hide-Maccarinelli, Warren would probably want options on Herbie if he were to win.

Two scenario's will happen in respect of Enzo boxing on Nov 3rd. He will either fight a guy who's so out of his depth facing Maccarinelli, that it will be the biggest legalised beating you have ever seen or he won't box on the bill!

If the first scenario takes place, I bet we here how Enzo is becoming increasingly difficult to match etc.

Bring over THE HERB I agree :TU:

Plus with Herb's various outstanding UK "legal problems", we might have the sight of Herbie KO'ing Macca, then being arrested in the ring by an ariel SWAT team.

Darnell is still available, he is within budget and willing 2 accept options

Posted: 30 Oct 2007, 05:07

Come on, it's too late for a remotely world class opponent. Darnell's an ecceptable opponent, but the world doesn't owe it to him - look at the vile thread over on ESB, the bollocks that's been written and the abuse going round in his name. It's clear - like it or not - that Warren is only concentrating on Calzaghe-Kessler...nothing else is as important. We were all asking for Calzaghe-Kessler before Calzaghe and Warren acknowledged Kessler existed. Notice how Rees disappeared off the bill & Macca can barely get an opponent for the messing around. So we have to sit through hrs of crap, in the early hrs of the morning, just to get the big fight. Nothing we haven't had to do before.
