Frankie Gavin won the Gold medal at the AIBA World championships tonight when he beat Domencio Valentino 18-10 in the final

Well done Frankie, the first ever Brit to win a gold in the World championships!

Now this is something to shout about!!! Go Gavin

Anyone think he should go pro now or wait till after Beijing?

What's Gavin like then? Is his style suited to the amateurs or does he have the ability to crossover and be a success in the pro's?

He is a smooth moving southpaw with exceptional counter punching ability.

He is tall, rangy with exquisite timing and an innate ability to negotiate distance. His style has been refined for the nature of international amateur competition but I have no doubt that when he crosses over and concentrates on pro boxing he will adapt handily.

As Tom said earlier he now fully has his 'man strength' and is more then capable of crossing over and making an excellent pro.

He will bust plenty of people of up before he is done!

Gavin is a natural and will make a great pro. Far better than Khan, Cant wait til he turns pro.

Tom Channey has done a magnificent job with Frankie at Hall Green, as he was a bit of a slow starter when he first started to box! I remember him at Small Heath copping a beating from nearly every one in sparring.

Frankie is a top bloke, and getting more confident by the day. He used to be really shy outside the ring.

He has moulded his southpaw style to make it really effective at the upper-echelons of the amateur boxing world. Beating Tischenko, who has always looked near enough unbeatable when i've seen him, in the semi-final must go down as one of the wins of the year by anyone.

Birmingham boxing is basking in rude health at the moment - what with World champion Frankie, Elcock being British champion, Macklin, Broadhurst and young Khalid Saeed-Yafai, who is definitely one to watch.

I saw two of his fights in Chicago, although unfortunately not the big win against Tishchenko. What stood out to me was exactly what Terry said, he does a fantastic job of setting up distance, and therefore was almost never available to get hit. The second of his fights I saw was against a big punching Turk, who had stopped his previous opponent with a barrage of power punches, and he never came close to finding his range against Gavin. He would reach and Gavin would move away, or when he tried to close Gavin would catch him coming in and they would tie up. I was left with the impression of more of a defensive wizard than a great puncher, but especially after watching the Calzaghe-Kessler fight, I have a great appreciation for the type of technique involved in being able to control the terms of a fight as he did.

Im not sure if he shouldn't go pro now, it may be that when the Cuban's come back into the scene for the Olympics Gavin will have problems progressing and perhaps his marketability is greater now.

I think on ballence more people will cair even if he looses in the Olympics but even so the cuban no show is certainly a factor.

Of course he should wait till after Beijing. His market value will rise 200% if he wins gold there. And evenif he doesn't nothing compares to the Olympics. That's once in a lifetime, there's no turning back. The pros can wait for now, it's not like he's 30 years old.

Fair enough, I wasn't sure cos I have been thinking that the other qualification torniments will be chock full of cubans now and therefore make it harder for our boys to qualify for stuff. If this is the case then he should deffinatly hang around imagen all the hype round him :-) good for him good for ametre boxing and good when he turns pro.

On a personal note I would like to say congratulations to Frankie's assistant trainer at Hall Green Ste McHale, a dedicated trainer and student of the game without who Frankie couldn't have scaled the heights he has - keep up the good work lads
