It was strange enough to have a national anthem for the ref (or is this a Continental custom?) but all three were absolutely appalling!

I was wondering that. I put it on during the Italian anthem and guessed it was the ref but wasn't quite sure why they were doing it. Was odd to hear them all without any music.

Yes they do it in Germany as well, pretty pointless exercise, playing the ref's national anthem.

Did anyone else notice that the French national anthem was apparently the extended 12 inch club remix, & we got the Radio Edit of "God Save The Queen"?

I agree though; I abhor our national anthem & the semi-German dorks it glorifies. Blake's "Jerusalem" would be more appropriate, no?

Though I admit I was belting it out Saturday night...

Could have been worse, the full Greece national anthem is 158 verses.

I didn't mean the respective merits of the anthems, I meant the quality of the singers. Terrible, all three!

I love "Scotland The Brave" its my fave national anthem (I'm English), I think it was one of the Edinburgh fights where it made my hair stand on end when the crowd were BELTING it out during the contest.

It pains me to say it but "God Save The Queen" is pretty shit, I have to sing it loudly out everytime I hear it as its the national anthem, but you'd have thought they could have come up with something better than that.

It also pains me to say that the French and Italian anthems are very good (in comparison), although Saturday renditions weren't the best

I was sitting near the male voice choir belting out the Welsh anthem in the Millennium Stadium last week. Now that was quality and pissed all over that nonsense in Paris.

Well I hope the Male Voice choir who sang Hen Wlad fy Nhadau at Calzaghe vs Kessler are still hanging their heads in shame. Naturally, I think its a great anthem - but the singing was appauling. Ray Gravell would have been turning in his grave.

I love Male Voice choirs, but that just seemed so bad - singing from the audience. We should have had Paul Potts there.

Borat singing the supposed Kazakhstan national anthem at that rodeo was pretty funny.

Yeah good call, the Welsh national anthem is another that can send tingles down my spine, especially in the Millenium stadium (or cardiff Arms) before a rugby match

They should have had them in the ring for the anthem, but I think they still did a good job and it was cool how they occasionally break into song at key moments in the fight - a bit like Woods' steel band.

I just wanted Buffer to say "and now singing Wen Wlad fy Nhadau" - that would have been cool. They sang it after the fight well, and sang the Great Redeemer well before the fight - just thought they were as flat as a pancake when it was their official turn to sing.

I bet you would have rather had Katherine Jenkins singing the anthem next to you. Actually, lovely looking girl that she is - I hate it when she is singing before the Rugby - her Welsh diction is awful. You cannot beat a Male voice choir - but hope they sing in tune next time!

Yep - can't beat a male voice choir for the anthem, but gotta agree, Katherine Jenkins sitting next to me would have been more than welcome! Not sure I'd have got much reporting done, though!

God save the QUeen is terrible - I'm not going to beg god to save the queen (even if I believed in god.)

I think RUle Britannia is much better. Or land of hope and glory.

Especially with that typo I have just done - now translated as Lamb land of my fathers (well, in West Walian slang Welsh).

The Japanese national anthem is brilliant, despite perhaps the words but the music itself is pretty inspiring.

I always liked my own Irish national anthem. Haven't got a clue what it translates into (Something about soldiers I think) but it always ends in a mighty roar at football matches where as "God Save the Queen" has a kind of downbeat and almost depressing end to it.

god save the queen is absolutely a national disgrace.
the words sound like something a tin pot third world dictator would write about himself.
its supposed to be the `NATIONAL` anthem, not the house of windsor (or saxe coburg-gotha`s ) anthem.
unless you are a rabid royalist who listens to funeral marches in your spare time there`s no way that thing will fire you up before a sporting event.
why doesnt one of these politicians who claim an average of £148,000 in expenses alone, never mind wages, have the balls to bring this question into the public domain.
if we had a referendum on it i think over 80% would say ditch it.
its sad to think a country that gave the world some of the greatest writers, poets and musicians can only come up with that syncophantic rubbish.
btw, i think the welsh national anthem is probably the best in the world and flower of scotland is pretty good too.
