Mormeck - how good actually is he?

This is in no way to denigrate David's achievement - he beat the no 1 rated guy in style and showed heart, speed and power.

BUT - I watched a lot of Mormeck on Eurosport in his early career, and was never that impressed and really surprised by his success.

I just watched the Haye fight for the third time and did think MOrmeck was quite a limited plodder. Musclebound but shopworn and not that special.

I think Macca would've battered him, and Glenn McCrory on his best day (against Lumumba) could even have beaten him (though I draw the line at Sammy Reeson!)

What do others think?

He's strong and methodical, but was just about the best of a pretty poor bunch. Don't think he would have beaten the likes of Cunnigham or Jirov.

He was getting outboxed by a pretty ancient Virgill Hill - I generally agree with your statement. His strength could have meant he was all wrong for Haye - but well done for Haye for prevailling.

even though he lost to bell in that first fight, i was impressed.

he was dishing out some powerful stuff.

bell did well to stand firm and take him late.

he didn't fight with the same fire against haye.

i thought he'd set a high pace like he did against bell first time round.

he only did it in bursts.

good fighter but perhaps a little past his hey day. :TU:

Well, JMM beat Braithwaite as well as Macca did (prime Braith as well), beat a Hill who was fitter (and pretty fast) as a cruiser, and waged 2 memorable battles with O'Neil Bell. He definitely muscled up too much and it was King that hurt him most by not getting him enough fights to stay fighting fit.

It's all well to say Macca would beat him, but Macca took the easy way to a belt and wasn't prepared to find out, was he?

I think Mormeck hit his prime around 03-05
his best days are behind him.

He was very strong, threw good combinations.
He was never a big one-punch guy.
He came back after being knocked out and beat the unified champ in his next to last fight.

I say he should make the top 10 all-time cruiserweights, but not top 5

I hope he hangs them up.

What you say is 100% correct. However, he only beat Hill via a KD - hill would have won (or a draw) had it not been a KD. Mormeck beat the best no doubt about it - but the best wasn't that good. O Neil Bell had a struggle with an ancient Arthur Williams.

But yes, your correct about Macca.

??????? Whoever called him a god????

Haye's win is a great achievement but no one will be talking about how good MOrmeck was in years to come.

As to Macca taking the easy way out; it'snot him it's allegedly who makes the fights - point the finger there.

(As with Joe Cal until recently - Allegedlly effectively wasted the best years of the uK's best post-war fighter.)

Anyway David is a great addition to Britain's champs - no 3 p4p. Not to mention a great interviewee and likeable.

Raff made him out to be indestructable.
Raff's a Frenchman and a young one at that. Case closed.

Unless that negates his very existence I'd say no. Case Open, solved by me.
Well technically if a case is solved; it's closed. Anyway, Point being that Raff's patriotism as well as his lack of maturity severely weakens his evidence nad may be discounted by the jury...........

Patriotism, yes, lack of maturity i think you are talking utter shit, i am 28 and i have been following boxing since i was 15...thats 13 years of being a fan so piss of dude...Mormeck just when he fought Braithwaite was by very far the best cruiserweight and would have beaten Haye at the time, he now is a faded fighter as sad as it makes me...
If you wonder how Mormeck had becomed unified champion, then you are perhaps the one lacking maturity.

come on ricky.

oh...and excuse my absense from the forum for a while, been on holiday to cyprus and moved house, still waiting for my broadband to be connected. hope you are all ok.

Don't agree he will have to stop him - he can outwork him, if not outbox him.
speaking of patriotism and lack of maturity here is a good one by you...thinking Hatton could outbox PBF...

Yes but maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had, and what you've learned from them, and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

And considering you're immature, excitable reaction your 28 years don't make up for your lack of learned experience.

His best wins are: O'Neil Bell; a guy that got knocked out in his second fight, beat him forst time and only just lost the second figh, Braithwaite, a guy who got ko'd in 4 by a former light middle and Virgil Hill who was 41 years old....

Hardly Evander Holyfield is he????

Right time, right plcae....no more

I agree with E. Mormeck was an absolute non-event during the Eurosport days. I know Holdsworth is a right old critic, but I remember his thoughts seemed pretty accurate at the time. Basically a tough plodder - much like Skelton, who might win things if a few others retired.

Previous to Haye though, I hadn't seen him fight in years, so he may well have improved considerably at one point like Enzo has. Gone are the days when real sparkle denoted the champion in waiting. Although Haye looks a bit special to be fair. A good chin and the ability to mow people down is enough.

So many nearly men from 10+ years ago would be belt holders today.

its always very easy to criticize, i remember everyone saying how Braithwaite was the next big thing at cruiser, also Bell got KO'd in his 4th fight, so what? Hopkins lost his very 1st fight as a pro ! you speak of learning from experience?? how about your statment that Hatton can outbox Floyd??? heck Hatton couldnt outbox Collazo ! and Collazo isnt exactly the top dog at Welter...but at least i'm not talking shit on you or trying to take anything away from Hatton, if i react like you do i would say Hatton has a padded record and has only 2 good wins against guys who are totally over the hill in Castillo and Tzsyu and that he came at the right place right time heh??? Mormeck was a great champ, he wasnt Holyfield but he is the 1st man since him to have unified the titles, give the man his due !
