Jean-Marc Mormeck was made WBA super champ after beating O'Neil Bell so the then Virgil Hill wins the normal vacant WBA title by beating Valery Brudov!

Then David Haye beats Jean-Marc Mormeck for the WBC + WBA titles! But I thought you can only be a super champ if you are the champ and you beat another champ?

So am i wrong or do we now have 2 WBA cruiserweight champs?

Oh, it's worse than that. You're right in thinking that Haye is now WBA champ, with Hill as 'regular' champ. But there's also the WBA 'interim' 'regular' champion, Firat Arslan.

So is haye super champ?

Haye have vacant the cruiser belts and Arslan and Hill will fight next weekend, so soon there will only be 1 WBA champ.

A super champion, in the WBA's eyes, is someone who unifies their title with another of the big 4. So Mormeck, WBA champion, became WBA super champion when he won Braithwaite's WBC belt.

That is when the "regular" belt is created, and which Virgil Hill picked up.

Usually it stops there. The interim title came into fruition because Hill had a series of injuries and ailments, medically known as fat-pay-cheque-fighting-Maske-itus. So Brudov was made interim champion because of this. The interim champion thing happening was just a coincidence with there being a superchamp too.

Thankfully, the farcical situation will get a little better, as Hill is finally fighting his mandatory (ie the interim champion, which is now actually Arslan, because he beat Brudov.) So then we're down to two titles. And if Haye were to move to heavy, or vacate the belts, that means there is no unified champion, ergo no super champion, ergo the Arslan/Hill winner becomes sole WBA cruiserweight champion.

And to actually answer you're question :P Haye just picks up the mantle of unified/super champion, like Mormeck did when he beat Bell in the rematch - JMM didn't come into that fight with any titles.

And a final little ditty. I think it was boxrec's own Neri who e-mailed the WBA asking them whether they were drug-riddled planks or mindless scheming bastards when it came to this super champion shite. They did actually respond, kind of agreeing and saying they planned to "phase out" the super champions. However, WBA super champions arn't exactly nuclear waste, and given the fact we've now got Mundine as a "regular" champ, I think we can safely assume the WBA will continue to line their pockets in the most ridiculous and enterprising ways they can find.

Haye reversed himself and now says that he'll stay at Cruiser. Hill, Haye and Arslan are ALL WBA champions. Perhaps there are not enough and the organization should bestow a few more belts.
At least one of them will be eliminated on the 24th.

Hi mate welcome to the forum. My understanding is that the Unified champion is made super champion because the requierment to take mandotories is less (basically all about money and sanctioning fees but I guess they could argue that its ever that or they couldn't afford to run there organisation so would have to strip people if they don't take a manditory every 9 months)

I don't understand why there manditory isn't the WBA regular champ though.

I think Haye is keeping his options open incase the money is good for the mac fight and he can't get anyone at HW in the ring so he's muddying the water a bit.

Well, Haye has move down from 100% "this is my last fight at Cruiser" to "I'm 95% certain this is my last fight at Cruiser".

BTW, I've just decided - I'm WBA Cruiserweight champion aswell.

Meanwhile, #1 Matt Godfrey will need to fight a final eliminator against #2 Rudolf Kraj. Godfrey already has signed to defend his NABF title against Jeremy Williams on November 24th
