Does anyone know of any current university academics who have an interest in boxing?

It doesn't need to be their speciality...a fan would do.

Geoffrey Beattie, who wrote 'On the Ropes: Boxing As a Way of Life' is Head of School and Dean of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester.

Yes. Me Ian. I've been a boxing fan for many years and until a couple of months ago I still trained at the Uni's boxing club. It isn't an area of research for me though - it's just a hobby.

Well, I don't know if I'll ever consider myself an academic - but I do lecture in Psychology full time at BA level and have a few published Sport Psych stuff to my name.

I have 2 GCSE's.

So i can't even spell acidemic.

Good book. He spent a year at Brendan Ingle's gym as research for that. Also wrote a book on Naz. Don't know whether it impacts on his credibility as a boxing writer, but he's also the resident shrink on Big Brother.

Most people in Sheffield thought Beattie was a bit of a joke and most of the stories in his book are just wind ups from the boys

Beattie's book with Naz on the cover, (was it 'In the shadows of boxing'?) was pretty dire I thought.
The bit when he got chinned in a nightclub scuffle was about the most entertaining bit.
