Unified Super-Middleweight king Joe Calzaghe has re-named Bernard Hopkins as Mary Hopkins* after the American's latest attempt to back out of a showdown.

Hopkins trainer Nazim Richardson said that his man should meet the winner out of boxing dinosaurs Roy Jones Jnr and Felix Trinidad rather the face the hard-hitting undefeated Welshman.

Calzaghe, who previously said that Hopkins would do his best to talk his way out of a fight against him, has likened Hopkins to Mary Poppins from the 1962 classic movie:

He said, 'As of now Bernard Hopkins should be called Mary Hopkins. Every time he says my name it's: SUPERCALZAGHEFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!'

'In fact, there is more fight in Mary Poppins than Hopkins. I'd have more respect for him if he just came out and said: "Joe, look, if I fight you I'm going to get my ass seriously beat. I accept that you are the best so why don't you just let me be and allow me to fight the winner of these old guys so I can just have an easy pay day" but instead, he's got his trainer to basically say: "Thanks, but no thanks, Bernard doesn't need to tangle with a dangerous young guy like you."

Referring to 2002 when Hopkins agreed to fight Calzaghe for $3 million only to come back the next day and demand $6m, Calzaghe said: 'If he is the legend that he says he is then fight me, otherwise be known as the guy who twice chickened out of fighting Joe Calzaghe.'

'At least Mary Poppins took a Spoonful of Sugar to help the medicine go down, Hopkins won't get that luxury against me!'

*Not to be confused with the Welsh folk singer of the same name who recorded the classic You've Had Your Day (My Friend). Sorry, correction, Those Were The Days (My Friend) which will be used on another press release!

Quite amusing, particularly the photo.

However the play on words with Bernard Hopkins/Mary Poppins doesn’t work that well for me.

Perhaps they could do another one comparing him to veteran English comedy actor Bernard Cribbins?

I think Calzaghe would win anyway.

Can't see how a 40+ yr old Hopkins could keep up with Joe's workrate. Unless of course he catches Joe clean. I would say Hopkins hits harder and cleaner than Kessler, even with his lighter weight.

I don't think so mate. Kessler punches harder than most LHW. Some of the noises that were made when Mikel hit Joe flush were haaaarsh.

Hopkins isn't a heavy puncher. Just look at this record:

His last KO was over 3 years ago against a blown up Welter/LMW.

Joe does need to stop being flashy, as he got caught too much against Kessler for my liking.

But Joe also found a way out of challegning Glen Johnson twice. In the long run this was for the better - because he ended up beating Lacy and Kessler. But it doesn't sound so good still, coming from Calzaghe.

You're gonna get a lot of this from both sides until something is finalised. I'm conviced tis, along with the Woods "in talks" story and Hopkins trainer speaking out is all part of the game.

However, that picture is gonna be my screensaver. I love it. More please GBP and SN.

Its all words from both sides, Joe has terrific respect and admiration for Hopkins -Its a fight Joe has yearned for, for years - Another Calzaghe win if it happens.

Seems like Woods then Hopkins - That could be Joes finale, a battle with the boxing legend, thats assuming Joe and BHOPS both win - About a year away I would guess.

I think Joe's heart is on two things. Light heavyweight, and Senior Stars (Hopkins, Jones, Trinidad).

I almost want Joe to lose soon, because I hate the way his career kept on movig backwards. It'd hasn't been a glorious reign, even though he's justified himself somewhat.
