Some guy heard rumours from gym rats so rolled 5k or so on Buster Douglas in Tokyo.

Who was that man?

Or was it just urban legend?

I remember reading somewhere about long time Vegas bookie Jimmy Vaccaro taking a bet from somebody who was on the know but I don't recall any names being mentioned.
I do remember Vaccaro mentioning the great numner of people rolling out 100K on bets figuring that they would make the easiest and quickest couple of thousand dollars...

I'm still waiting to see any evidence that a sports book actually took bets on the Tyson-Douglas fight. I've heard the "42-1 underdog" line but from all I can tell it is an urban legend. Can anyone point to any hard evidence of a sports book that took bets on this fight?

I thought there was only 1 place in Las Vegas that had the odds.. and that's where the 42-1 came from.

I have always wondered about the so called 42-1 odds available for this fight.

If you can ever get ANY fighter at odds of 42-1(let alone a fighter deemed good enough to contest the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world!)I fully advise you to have something of a wager

I also think that the supposed 42-1 odds were probably not actually offered to anyone. While Douglas wasn’t one of the top 3 or 4 contenders at the time, he was generally regarded as a pretty skilled fighter and was on a decent run leading up to the fight. Anyone who saw him in the first 5-6 rounds against Tucker before he ran out of gas realized that he was a very live opponent for Tyson.

I wasn’t able to get a line locally, but did win more than a few bucks from a friend of mine at the time.

the 42/1 was possibly the price you would have got for Douglas to stop Tyson in that round. It is more likely that the price would have been something like 1/33 for a Tyson victory and possibly 16/1 for a douglas win with odds of 33/1 for a draw.

round by round i would have thought maybe round 1 to 3, 2/1 for a tyson ko 4 to 6, 4/1 for a tyson ko, 7 and 8, 6/1, and 9 and 10. 8/1 and 11 and 12 possibly 10/1.

that doesnt look right at all, surely the round bets would have been wider than that for douglas. And anyway, tons of guys have won as a much bigger than 42/1 for a round favourite

coming from Ohio and recalling the hoopla following the victory, I remember seeing on television the tick tape parade for Douglas in Columbus and how it was announced that that particular day was to be known as 'Buster Douglas Day'...in days following it showed the actual guy who made the bet on Douglas (he was from Ohio as well I presume) and that he made multi-millions of dollars off of it.

Can't remember his name though, sorry. But its no urban legend.

I don't bet but I had him down to win, he was so "Up" for the fight, so determined in his interviews that you could tell he would do it. Tyson on the other hand was getting more and more lax as time was going on in every way!

Good luck to the guy who put $1500 on Buster. If it had been a fix, I think there would have been a lot more than that on Buster.

Buster was just the better fighter on the night.
