Mundine's Opposition

Just a quick question on Mundine's level of opposition as i was watching the Clavero fight yesterday. I know he had an eye injury but he was fighting some terrible opponents prior to that. I respect Mundine's skills and his achievements but Acosta, Nievas, Clavero is a pretty desperate line of foes and Clavero was especially terrible.

Next on the schedule is Nader Hamden who lost over 8 recently to a comebacking Mads Larsen. Why is he being let anywhere near a "world title"? I know the WBA are suspect but are all these fall-over jobs mandatories or hand picked voluntaries? Any discussion welcomed :TU:

you can only fight who will fight you,im sure if calzaghe stood up and said he would fight choc,we could just see how good he really is.im just hoping the mundine, hamden fight is fairdinkum,it should be over in 4 rds, if its not then Question his ability :box: calzaghe would end hamdens career and choc will hav to as well to stop the knockers. :TU:

That middleman is the reason he gets away with this bullshit( you can only fight who will fight you) There are plenty of tough fights at 168 for Mundine and they would all fight him for his belt guys like Lacy, Allan Green, Miranda, Andrade the list is endless and they are all far better than the scrubs he is fighting at the moment.

I honestly don't think the fight crowds in most of the other states would bother turning up to most of Mundine's defences, such is his usually woeful level of opposition :-?

Stadiums Limited had no problems getting Luis Rodriguez out here to kick Mundine's father's arse.

In the old Fighter magazine, there was a great cartoon, which pictured trainer Ern McQuillan delving into a bag to try and find the next opponent for Tony Mundine. The bag was labelled "1001 bums to fight Tony"

Like father like son!

After Luis ko'd Tony in less than 60 seconds, I never forget the sight of Tony's head trying to beat the count, whilest the rest of his body lay still.

Tony would not fight Charkey Ramon. I would have loved to see that fight. Ern McQuillan made out Mundine would beat Ramon and Mahanga in the same night, but every time Bernie Hall put out a challenge for Ramon he was ignored.

There was a story around in the sixties about why Ern McQuillan got away with avoiding challenges to his fighters. Harry Miller (no, not Harry M. Miller of "Hair" fame, the other one) was Stadiums Limited's matchmaker in Sydney. Harry was a poof and had a crush on Ern. Ern never returned the affection but Harry would do anything for him.

I like hearing about the details of days gone past, but there are some things that i just don't want to know about. Call me homophobic, but i'll just put my hands over my ears and go "lalalalala".

It might have explained wha McQuillan got away with, though.

I tried to find a pic of Ernie McQuillan but couldn't. From my memory though a person would have to be very easily pleased to have a crush on the big guy. He wasn't an oil painting

One of the most famous fairies in recent times in Sydney was the late solicitor John Marsden, a descendant of the "Flogging Parson" Samuel Marsden. Marsden said in an interview that he liked his men with cauliflower ears and teeth missing. It takes all kinds....

Here is a link to a picture of Ern in his old gym.

As he got older, Ern lost a fair bit of weight.
