Just wondered if anyone saw the first fight, I was away and missed it but by all accounts Hughes deserved it and Pickering must have slipped unless there was a legitimate excuse.

Anyone know how Pickering's camp feel, see he already has a date for Munroe pencilled in for March time, sounds as if he thinks he will reverse the decision

Hughes couldn't miss with his straight southpaw blows all night. Cracking performance. I had the Pontefract boxer winning 78-75.

The rematch is in Burton on Jan 18 and i'm looking forward to being there. I expect a better-prepared Pickering to win this time around though i won't count Hughes out.

Carl Greaves said Esham's head wasn't in the right place in November, but it is this time around. He said a win over Sean and a win over local rival Rendall Munroe (Leicester) will secure him a crack at the European title later on in 2008.

Just a thought, but maybe Pickering can’t deal with southpaws? Three of his six losses (Hunter, Martinez and Hughes) have come against portsiders. That said, Martinez flattened him in the first - catching him cold - and Hunter was too busy, wanted it too much. Hughes, however, outboxed him.

Esham didn't look as if he knew what to do.

I favour Hughes to do the business again. He totally had Pickering's number that night and the resulting boost to his confidence, coupled with my belief that Esham's on the slide, leads me to think it'll be a repeat performance.
Even if Pickering does manage to turn it around, he won't get past Munroe. The latter is one of those fighters who's flown under the radar a bit but has really impressed my of late. He's strong, fit and seems to have real hunger, and I can see him cutting a swathe through the domestic opposition in 08.

I will be rooting for Esham as he is a friend and i want to see him do well in boxing. I hope he boxes the way he used to box and not rush in their this time. I was there at the first fight here some pictures if anyone is interested.

Really looking forward to Pickering v Hughes II. Anyone seen any prices for it yet with the bookies?

Think thats about right really, you have to make Pickering favourite on the basis of his form but perhaps he is slipping and Hughes has his number but I could not back either at the prices, so by that, I assume they have it about right

no reason why not if he turns up in good nic like last time and sticks to a game plan. Come on Sean, not that I've got anything against Pickering like, who prime for prime would be streets ahead obviously.

Should eb a good , competative event- two well matched fighters. Is it in Burton for sure? Some sources had it down as the metrodome in Barnsley.

The Burton Meadowside Leisure Centre I think is due to be demolished to build an f---ing "Tesco Extra" store.

It’s in Burton, 100 per cent certain. Errol Johnson has a couple of his lads on the bill - Rob Hunt (although Paul Dykes-trained and managed), Sam Horton, Duane Parker and 20-year-old Burton debutant Carl Groombridge, who won the NACYP National amateur title at the end of 2006.

Jonjo Finnegan, a local hero who regulary shifts 400+ tickets for fights at this venue, was going to be chief support until his car accident in late November.

The demolition has been put on hold for the time being. It will be a fooking travesty if they knock the atmospheric Leisure Centre down. One of the best atmospheres i have experienced came there: Matt Galer-Simon Sherrington in 2006. Cracking fight.

me too but the photos do tell the story of the fight and pickerings corner wanted to pull him out in rnd 7 what can he change?

Too much is getting knocked down nowadays, although I think they are building a new leisure centre.

It is a shame too for the traditional high street shops, that Tesco may well put out of business.

Duane beat Peter Dunn on his debut over six-twos, though will know try and repeat the trick over four-threes. He has never done three-minute rounds before.

As for Perry, Ingle always has a difficult time matching him. Good fighter is Jack. He has outpointed Laight before, doing so on the Froch-Dodson undercard in 2006.

From what you say Duane Parker - Dunn and Perry - Laight sound like forgone conclusions- with no disrespect meant to the fighters involved, these arn't the sort of matches I enjoy.

Esham "Brown Sugar" Pickering defends his coveted British super-bantamweight title against former opponent and former conqueror Sean "Short Fuse" Hughes later this month in downtrodden Burton.
The two met in a non-title affair a couple of months ago in Nottingham, where local man Pickering, from nearby Newark, slumped to a points defeat after eight bloody rounds on the Carl Froch-Robin Reid bill at the Ice Arena. Pontefract man Hughes, who posts regularly on BoxRec and slaves outside the ring as a warehouseman, picked off the champion with straight southpaw lefts and busted him up to record one of the upsets of 2007.
A real shocker.
But can history repeat itself? Pickering has now lost three of his last seven (in good company) and you start to wonder if the years of boiling down to make super-bantam are taking their toll at 31. He never looked particularly small as a featherweight, the weight at which he challenged for the British title 10 long years ago.
Of course, the former European champ may have taken the gritty, accurate, battle-hardened Hughes lightly. We already glimpsed the Yorkshireman's upset potential against Wembley dynamo Billy Corcoran in a thrilling and controversial eight-rounder in 2006; Hughes was stopped in the last round of a fight he was clearly dominating.
So this one looks fascinating. Hughes has been around the block a few times but is still only 25 and essentially boxed Pickering's ears off last time. But the champion will be fired up with his title on the line and showed in winning it (for the second time) against Londoner Marc Callaghan last year how solid and effective he can be at his best; Esham dominated a man who earned his shot by getting past Hughes (just) and already has his eyes on next challenger Rendall Munroe (another underrated southpaw) and a Lonsdale Belt for life.
So is Hughes a tune-up? After last time, not on your life. Expect BOTH men to give it everything in a real thriller. But expect Pickering to come through.

First round was a carbon copy of the last fight, Hughes caught him repeatedly and stunned him. Second round a bit more even but Pickering shaken slightly again. Pickering looking a little better offensively but defensively terrible he isn't slipping or blocking anything.

Third round, Pickering using the ring and beating Hughes to the punch now looks like he is having to force it out a bit though not very fluid. Pickering looks to have his legs back. A little more elusive that round.
