The historic Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York, has been chosen as the venue for the titanic showdown between Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins and England's Joe Calzaghe set for April 13, 2008.

The Yankee Stadium has been home to some thirty memorable boxing championships, including the famous 1938 Joe Louis victory over Germany’s Max Schmeling. It also hosted Pope Paul VI when he celebrated mass before an 80,000+ crowd in 1965.

This should be funny. Drunken Welsh mingling with ghetto New Yorkers? An outdoor boxing match in April in New York? And a half-empty stadium? On a Sunday? All they need now is Michael Buffer to announce Joe as 'The Pride of England'.

That was even worse considering:
a) They're mates
b) They fight for the same promotion/management company

Dunno if you've seen the youtube confrontation backstage at the Hatton weigh-in, but that smelt of a set-up to me. No way would that many cameras be there when they "bumped" into each other.

Can I just say that my respect for Calzaghe has gone up several notches after this exclusive has revealed that he's English.

I'm hoping they used his BoxRec birthplace and just made a mistake.

At least they didn't refer to him as British, like usual (I'm not Welsh, it just annoys me that they refer to anyone from a British country as British, I might start referring to them as North American).

I am Welsh by birth and was brought up there by my Welsh mum, but I consider myself British primarily, and Welsh specifically. It's hardly the same as saying "North American", as Britain isn't exactly a continent!

But I agree it would be better to describe Calzaghe as Welsh rather than British, because to the rest of the world, British = English. But calling him British is much better than calling him English, as this article did!

(On a related note, didn't Jeff Lacy say he would come to Wales to fight Calzaghe in London, or something like that?)

I've learnt that South Americans get annoyed when we refer to people from the U.S.A. as Americans. United States Of Americans isn't as catchy though.

I just get annoyed when I work in America and people say "are you British?". It really gets on my tits.

He always was going to play for Wales, his Dad was a good rugby player, and he always said he would play at Cardiff Arms Park for Wales just like his Dad.
