Assuming his boxrec record is accurate, then he has had THREE fights, including a loss. Which makes a total and utter mockery of the concept of "title fight."

Eric Armit did a piece recently on BBN about the difficulty in verifying some African records because they don't all get logged.

Basically, their own national Board verifies one for them when a promoter comes knocking for someone to bring overseas. Then the said promoter can wave the piece of paper in the air, or to the BBBoC, and that's them covered.

Strange how some African national boards never suddenly seem to verify a 3-18 record, eh? Always a winning one, as far as I know. It's the norm, certainly.

This is not to say this particular lad's record isn't completely on the level, of course.

I'm sure Aryeetey has had more than three fights because I know record-keeping is difficult/unreliable in certain parts of the world. However, if it is indeed hard to get a proper record for the guy, how on earth did he get a Commonwealth ranking? Even if he's really 20-1 rather than 2-1, the fact he's so obscure makes me wonder what the CBC is playing at.

Brash Mitchell defends his Commonwealth super-featherweight belt against Ghanaian Thomas Okanja Aryeetey this Saturday at the ever-stifling York Hall (that place is sooo hot).
Mitchell, of course, was due to step up in a crack at the British title held by Leeds puncher Carl Johanneson on the show but "Ingemar" cried off with a back injury. Shame. The smouldering Dagenham Destroyer has cruised to 24 straight wins and looked ready for the harder-hitting but slower Johanneson. As the mandatory, he will get his chance.
Instead, he ticks over against little-known Aryeetey, who outscored fellow countryman Odalai Lamptey over the championship 12 last August and went the distance with George "Red Tiger" Ashie in 2005 - the man Mitchell outpointed to win the title in a gruelling 12-rounder at York Hall in 2006. Ashie floored Aryeetey in the eighth and last round with body shots.
Aryeetey also boxed in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, where he was outscored early by a Zambian 19-18.
So he can look after himself and reminds me of Thomas Awinbono, the Ghanaian who extended Bradley Pryce over 12 rounds last year in Cardiff - raw, strong, tough and aggressive. Mitchell, who has a classy jab and the edge in speed, will look to outbox the challenger before stepping on the power from the middle rounds.
But these Ghanaians rarely get stopped.

Why not? Seemingly everybody and his dog can get "published" online if they want to, so why not somebody who can actually write?
