Last fight as champ or last career fight?

Foreman looked pretty good against his considerably younger opponent Shannon Briggs.

It's kind of sad that most great fighters fight too long and lose their last fight and/or don't look good.

Of those that Robinson mentioned:
Patterson was the only one that lost, though in his defense he was fighting Ali. Holmes didn't look anywhere near as good as he once did. Lewis won but looked horrible.
Tunney and Marciano were knocked down in their last fight, but overall looked good. To be fair to the other guys, both were much younger than the rest of those mentioned.

boxbuzz mentioned Foreman, who considering that he was so old, did pretty well.

I haven't seen the fight, but Jim Braddock's win over Tommy Farr seems like a decent win.

Foreman was ROBBED plain and simple. He embrassed Briggs that night. Oddly he just seemed to have an "on" night at 48 years old after some bad/tepid performances earlier vs Schultz, Grimsley, and Saverese, very much like how, defying logic, Holyfield looked better vs Rahman than he had in years. Sometimes an older fight can find that "spark" to put on a solid performance that one last time, it's just impossble to predict when.

To the contrary, Farr deserved the decision vs Braddock.

Tunney wasn't knocked down in his last fight, he fought and dominated the forgettable Tom Heeney after fighting Dempsey to end his career.

Patterson was doing fairly well vs Ali in his last fight.

I meant looked good in there last performance.

Lewis - one could argue that he looked terrible, sure but he dug deep and showed that he could stave of defeat.

Patterson - lost to Ali yes, but he was very game and competive in thsi fight and showed he was still good.

Marciano - He fought old man Moore and KO'd him after he himself being dropped. Looking good.

Tunney - already covered above.

Holmes - was 52 and looked it, but he beat every morons favourite boxer in Butterbean.


True about Foreman, its sad how some times it seems past gift decisons are settled by robberies.

I wish for the sake of Moore and Marciano, people would lay off the both of them by labeling Moore as nothing more than an old man. FFS he was rarely ever knocked down or out in his career, and would hold on to the 175 pound title virtually a decade AFTER his bout with Marciano, and remained a reasonably high top ranked contender in both the heavyweight and light heavyweight classes up until he retired.

It was a solid victory over a man who was still in his prime. End of story.

In regards to me saying old man Moore, that is reality as he was 'old' in a boxing sense but also it is an affectionate name sake for him.

I was raising the point earlier that the win over Moore for Marciano is a good career point and a knock down at the hands of Moore on Rocky's behalf is no slant on ones career.

I agree with you. If you watch Moore's two fights with Durelle,he has tremendous hand speed and still looks trim. 3 years after fighting the Rock. The fight that always puzzled me about Moore was his unification fight with Patterson. What happened in that 5th round?(don't tell me he got knocked out. I know that)

Of course you were right about Tunney's last fight being against Heeney. Don't know what I was thinking. Perhaps Tunney is the winner as far as having the best last fight.

I think aside from being knocked out...

he felt pain and speed at the hands of a damned young, powerful
fighter.

It just was not his night..or round.
