Middleweight Match-up - Mickey Walker -vs- Marvin Hagler?

What a spectacular match this might've been. Marvelous Marvin & The Toy Bulldog in a rough, bruising contest over fifteen rounds. There's no quit in either man, & there would have to be, because this could get ugly. Walker had a long & distinguished reign in two weightclasses & went all the way up to Heavyweight where he fought world-class opposition (late in his career, no less), & of course Hagler, dominant in his own right, was not short on excellent opposition throughout his career.

This might be one of those suffocating affairs from which neither man ever really recovers (ala Ali-Frazier III, Chavez-Taylor I etc.) with Walker emerging the victor by way of superior punch output.

Thoughts?

I just can't see a straight in your face guy beating one of the most complete fighters of all-time....this would be another Hagler-Antuofermo I & II or Hagler vs Hamsho affairs.

Hagler by TKO on cuts or by decision...Too good of a fighter :TU: :TU: :TU:

Walker had lots of skill along with his aggression . . .to compare him to Hamsho or Antuofermo is just plain wrong.

This would be a BRUTAL war and could go to either man. Walker might have the edge due to his superior punching power.

I like Hagler in this mythical matchup. Of course I like Hagler in almost any mythical matchup. Hagler was a fighter who could beat his opponents any way he wanted. The only rap on him was that he too often fought the style his opponents had the best chance of beating him at. I think it was a macho thing with him. He would box against the boxers and slug it out with the sluggers. Didn't matter though.

I don't underestimate how great Walker was. I just think Hagler was greater.

TC it sounds like we'll have to agree to disagree on the outcome of a Hagler/Monzon event.

Well one thing is for certain, old Toy Bulldog wouldn't for one minute be afraid of Marvelous Marvin...he would tear into him from the get go, like he done against Sharkey and Schmeling...but...I favor Marvin over Walker, only because, Hagler, unlike Walker, is a top five middleweight champion and Hagler could take alot of punishment, and really give it back as well.

I still say Marvin was robbed against Ray Leonard, and if Marvin could beat the best of the 1980's middleweights, arguably the best era since the days of Robinson, LaMotta, Cerdan and the rest...then Walker, who failed against Tiger Flowers (decision was total highway robbery) and who didn't have half the know all and skills that Duran or Leonard or Hearns had...

I see a TKO in around 8 to 10 rounds, for Marvin Hagler to win.

Well you will note I said I like Hagler in ALMOST any mythical matchup. A Hagler/Monzon matchup is one I can't get my head around. Too close to call for me. If I give any edge to either one of them it would be Hagler only because I saw more of his fights and was a big fan.

Ah! Respect....well that is all you can ask from a Hagler fan....and as a Monzon fan I share the respect and give a slight edge to Carlos. Both are pure forces of Nature.

And with the polls that have been done on this subject on past threads I can tell you that I am in the minority with my opinion. I attribute that to the age of contributors here. More folks have seen Hagler fight than Monzon fight.

The saving grace is that of those who have actually seen both fight the numbers slightly favor Monzon.

What a fight that would have been!

I pick Monzon over Hagler and Walker.

Hagler-Walker would be a great fight.

Hagler chewed everyone up who came at him. If Walker is leading then I'd expect Hagler to have the better of it. If Walker pulls a Duran and hangs off a little it will be a hard night for Marvin as Walker is bigger and stronger than Roberto.

I've always thoguht there was something of this in the Leonard fight.

Many thought that Hagler would move in, turn it into a brawl and swat leonard. But it was as if Hagler didn't want this. If Hagler had imposed himself and made the fight a brawl we'd have all said well Ray was better the boxer he just couldn't hang with the bigger man, especailly after the lay off.

it has always seemed to me that Hagler wanted to prove a point by outboxing Leonard.

Of course the main error in judgement was that Ray had maintained much of his hand speed whereas Hagler's had declined sharply.

hey buzz - what a fight that would have been. i'm with carlos though he would have had to be at his scintillating best.
if i had the choice of ringside for hagler/monzon or hagler/walker it would have to be carlos/marvin

Can you imagine for even one tenth of a moment that Leonard could have snuck such nonsense past Monzon? He would have been beaten down to his primary components inside of 7 rounds.

We had this once before and I'll say it again. If Hagler boxes the way he did against Sibson and in Hamsho I he beats Walker by about 3 pts. If it's toe to toe war for 15 rds, Walker is physically stronger and I think he wins by about 2.

Hagler close decision 10, 12, or 15.

This would be an absoulte war I'll go with Hagler in a close decision.

Halger was a southpaw tomato.....he beats no one but over matched medicore MW and fat welters. Hagler loses by KO. :TU:

You Hagler guys make me sick.....Hagler never had any speed.

in the 80's,hagler by referee stoppage in 5 or 6.too much blood.
in walker's time period,a great battle.hagler by decision with walker getting a standing ovation for hanging in there.similiar to armstrong/ross.

You're right. It's a wonder the man ever made it out of the ring alive. I'll be paying close attention to all your future posts so I can learn something about this sport.

Watch your step Tomato-Can, lest you be absolutely cut in half with one of Ringsider's scathing, " " or, worse, the dreaded double-whammy, "  "

Keep watching closely. He'll impart some of the most interesting gems on boxing you'll ever have the pleasure of laughing at :TU:

if anyone can do it tomato can can. a superb, hilarious riposte to ringsiders well judged anti hagler broadside.

It is not anti Hagler. It is merely a statement of fact.....

To say Hagler had speed, is a good indication that a blind man was sitting ringside calling the Hagler fights, and now has access to a computer.

ringsider harbors ill will against all those with a "leftist" stance. At least in pugilism.
