Hartlepool star Nigel Wright was today handed the chance of getting into boxing's big time.
The Gus Robinson-managed fighter is to challenge for the Commonwealth light-welterweight title at Peterlee Leisure Centre on Friday, February 8.

Wright, the reigning English champion in the 10-stone division, will tackle unbeaten Nigerian Ajose Olusegun, in what will be a huge night for Hartlepool boxing with former British, Commonwealth and European champion Michael Hunter making his ring return in the chief support act.

Fair play to Nigel Wright, not a lot of domestic fighters willing to go against Olusegun. He's got no chance though

It's possible that without much of a fanbase, Olesogun is in the unenviable position of many African boxers based in the states.

It takes a lot of persistance from a promoter to get the big fights neccessary for these fighters, and also as they are not exactly drawing big crowds, they are not the focus of their promoters efforts neccessarily.

Nigel Wright seemed at one point like he'd be up there by now at British level, but it never worked out so smoothly.

But a win here would fire him up a peg or 3, Commonwealth title isn't it?

The posters are right that mention Ajose's activity levels, I'm sure he'll be very good on the night but he'd probably be better still if he was boxing more.

Against Nuumbembe it's probably worth pointing out that Nuumbembe saved that show at very short notice and shed some weight very quickly. I think the original bill collapsed and as Ali has to earn a certain amount of money to keep his visa or something going, the purse was too decent to knock back. Plus he's a welter and Olusegun boxes at LW.
I wouldn't read too much into it as Nuumbembe's too cute by far to go round getting knocked out, even as good as Olusegun is.

Correct, Ali had to lose 9 1/2 lbs overnight to make the weight, the poor lad was goosed come fight time.

i like Nuumbembe.......I think he could have a very respecatble bash at it on a world stage if he could only fcking make it there.

You've got to favour Olusugun. However, I thought he looked average vs Reid. So perhaps, the Pryce/Nuumbembe wins might have flattered him a little. Pryce was very inconsistent at that time of his life, and Nuumbembe (who lets not forget, lost to a beatable fighter in Watson last time) wasn't in the best of preperation.

I don't think an upset is completely off the cards.... you've got to favour Olusugen though - but Wright has a decent chin and has (on my card) avenged both his losses. So maybe, he was a little off form for some reason when he lost.

Wish Olusegun was fighting Lynes.

Maybe they would have given Ali a rematch???

Ali even offered to fight for free, it must have fallen on deaf ears.

Ali has finished boxing now and is going back to Namibia and back to the army. He leaves next week.

i've sparred ajose many times and i can tell you that those wins definitely did not flatter him. He is a talented fighter that is way to good for any one on the british domestic scene. can be a little open when he throws the left but he has excellent hand and foot speed, to evade being caught

I thought Ali was more set on it than that.........it's a pity. He'd beat Watson barring a cut if they fought again. Guess my dream of them throwing Mattwho Hatton to Ali is out the window now.

As for Nigel Wright he deserves credit for stepping up to the plate, although given the profile he stands to gain if he managed to win, it would have been extremely unlikely he would have ever turned it down.
