Welterweight boxer Ali Nuumbembe flies back to Namibia next week after a great 6 years on The British boxing scene.

Ali has thoroughly enjoyed his time in the UK and has pulled off some amazing achievments.
however he says his biggest achievment is meeting and befriending so many good people.

Ali is a Captain in The Namibian Defence Force and is hoping he can teach boxing to the youngsters coming through in his homeland.

A hard, brave, determined, popular and very skillful fighter.

I first became aware of Ali when he came to Hartlepool and gave my chum Francis Jones (who was at the time unbeaten) a very hard time over 6 rounds, winning on points...........in hindsight it was probably a good result for Franny going the 6.

I was very confident that Ali would beat David Barnes on the back of that single viewing........in the end he got a draw.......I thought he'd won.

Regretably the Jones fight was never captured on film. I remember all these people descending on the Borough Hall with Ali tee-shirts on........there were loads of 'em and in all my visits to that venue it's the most prominent showing of support by "away" fans. I spoke with a couple of them, who looked and spoke nowt like him, and yet they seemed to love him. Considering the hall has staged a number of Brit title and since then an IBF world title fight, when Ali was involved in a none title 6 rounder, that's an achievement in itself.

Whilst it is without doubt Ali could still make progress in the sport, it could probably be said that from where he started off he actually OVERachieved.

Boxing in this country will be poorer as a result of this.

I wish him all the best for the future. In a world awash with 'World' titles, the Commonwealth belt may seem somewhat marginal. Ali's reaction when he was announced the winner against Anderson shows that it isn't. He's had a good career, but more importantly, he's always struck me as a great person. He can look back on his time in boxing with pride, and I hope he can inspire some kids back home. If he can rise out of the appalling situation of his childhood, others can too.

Also, fair play to you Chado. You invested a lot of time and money in Ali, probably knowing you were never going to see any material reward from it. But without you, Ali would never have had the chance to win that belt. Well done mate.

I enjoyed watching Ali fight. I imagine his last defeat left him with nowhere to go in the domestic scene which is a real shame. It was a cruel way to end his career in England as that cut arguably ended his chances of rescuing the fight. Still think he had a lot more to offer.

He had guts and a slick fighting style that was easy on the eye. His win over Anderson was thoroughly deserved.

Good luck Ali. You will be sadly missed.

Gutted I never got to see Ali fight live. I was hoping to catch him this year.

gutted 4 him,you would struggle to find a more decent and dedicated fella,wish him all the best in the future,know he is very well thought of back home and will be treated like a star,its a shame still thought there was good fights out there for him but fair play to him,better retiring yourself than having to retire,due to bad lossesor whatever

All the best Ali, i remember when he first burst onto the scene and Chado got me a signed photo and informed me he was living in a caravan outside a pub! A dedicated athlete with a cult following and i wish him all the best for the future.

Shame Ali is hanging them up I always liked watching his fights, he always seemed to generate a good atmosphere, I'm sure he could have done a bit more in boxing but its good that he's got plans for something else and I hope they work out...

far be it for me to stick my oar in but he's been at this game for 15 years or more probably.......he mustn't be any older than 28 yr old and you've got 35 yr old guys like Forest and De la Hoya boxing for world titles............in 2 or 3 years Ali could be boxing for a world title for a couple hundred grand maybe............

Could the Namibia Defence Force appoint one of those other boys in the film for a year or 2, you know like acting commander or something til Ali's properly finished........come on Ali you've got too much talent and worked too damn hard to pack in at the peak of your powers!!

At least if he could just get a rematch with Watson..........I'm sure if Ali had won the fight this decision would have been put on the back burner.
