Calzaghe v any Cruiser champ to be a 3 weight Champ.

Years ago, nearly everyone said Winky would be too much for Floyd, but now people think differently. Once Joe wins the light heavy crown, he could take a risk and fight a cruiser to become a 3 weight world champ. once he wins the LH crown I think people's views will change. Could Joe outbox Enzo for 12 rounds?? Im sure they have already sparred many hundreads of rounds, they probably already know.

That fight is never, ever going to happen though is it...
....though he probably would outwork him over 12.
I'd fancy him against the other Cruisers but dont think he'll go up that far. Think he'll fight BH and CW and then retire....
He won't take on to much more than that at this stage in his career, BH is enough of a challenge.

I think Joe could use his speed and skills to win a Cruiser title.

The Macca fight won't happen, Haye will be eating pies at 230, but I could see him beating Cunningham possibly. It's a big ask though.
But could he beat Bobby Gunn?

Joe is far from a sweet pea guys, he may be quick and elusive to an extent but he still gets caught with enough shots that if they were being delivered by one of the fit and fairly quick cruiserweights would have him in deep trouble.
Not to mention how the extra weight would effect him. Joe is very lean, I doubt he would put the extra weight on in the same way as Floyd has done and could see him coming in very soft at 200 pounds.
Joe is a fantastic boxer and clearly the best at 168 but lets not go overboard here.

The key question is whether Joe would be able to resist his natural impulse to stand and trade. He can get away with doing so against guys his own natural size, may well manage it at light heavy, but would surely end up on his back if Enzo, Haye, Mormeck or Cunningham landed.

I did think about his chin. Maybe with the old weight restrictions it was possible, but being hit by a 200+ pound fighter is a big ask.

Joe says he has to loose 3 stone to make super middle, he said this in his South Wales Argus column.

That would make him 209 lbs!

I dont think the Clinton fight will motivate Joe enough. We all know who wins this fight.

Remeber Joe has categorically said he wants to be a 2 division world champion. Hopkins doesn't have a "decent" belt, just RING and IBO. Clinton's Cards does.

I think there are two problems for Joe at cruzer, the big one is his power, because of his hands what ever he weighs he will only be able to hit so hard which will not be able to back up most cruzer weights to impose his will on to the fight. Secondly is that as was disgussed earlier with more weight his movment will not be as good, if he can be put on the floor by Byron Mitchall then imagen the kind of queer street that a whack from Haye Mac or Cunningham would put him on.

If you want to make amazing history , you have to take big risks. Roy went to heavy for 1 fight against Ruiz, maybe Joe can go to cruiser for one against any of the belt holders in the future.

How would Joe have done against Ruiz??

Yes spot on. Let's see how he fares at Light-Heavy first, bearing in mind in his first fight there he is facing a blown up Middleweight!

This is my opinion, but I think Joe doesn't want to take a big risks. He said in an interview that he wants to be one of the few champions that retires undefeated.

Calzaghe has left it to late in his career to be stepping up in weight/s seeking big fights. He's 36 and still looks electric when he fights, but i have seen a different Calzaghe in his last few outings. Although many may disagree, i think he's been tiring down the stretch recently and his punch seems to loose its pop after about 8 rounds.
I think he's there to be beaten. There's not a great deal of talent above him however, Clinton Woods certainly aint going to beat him thats for sure. He should beat Hopkins on workrate alone but i'm not as convinced as everyone else seems to be that Calzaghe takes this easily. Hopkins is in the running IMO and he could make this close. I'm not ruling out Hopkins pulling this one out the bag. Then there's Chad Dawson, i believe he would give a 36 year old Calzaghe big big problems.

I always fancied Joe to beat James Toney - even the heavyweight version.

Joe couldnt beat Haye or Macca in a competitive bout. I think hed struggle beyond LH because although he is a great fighter, his defence can be leaky and he does take a punch. He would be in trouble if he took punches from a genuine cruiser.

Totally disagree. Joe can still fight at ridiculous pace for the full twelve rounds. Against kessler he altered his stratedgy slightly mid way but still kept his work rate , throwing blistering combinations all night long.
Some have mentioned his chin, well some of the shots that Kessler looked like they could have killed a man! But he took em.

I totally agree with Ali's post. Hugely impressive effort against Kessler but it's Joe's workrate and punch output that beat him, not power.
Hopkins is a tremendous athlete, it will be a very tough night for both men.
