Calzaghe to appear on American Gladiators...

AP -- After months of speculation as to when and against whom, British boxing phenomenon Joe Calzaghe would make his debut in the United States, the answer became official today. Super Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe will appear on the February 23rd episode of American Gladiators against TV repair man Conway Stapleton of Brooklyn, NY. The forty-one year old Stapleton was a varsity wrestling star in high school. The event, which is something of a surprise to most Boxing insiders, has been made in large part to Calzaghe's success against American reality TV stars. Calzaghe's promoter, allegedly, explained, "We have seen the level of interest here in pitting a World Champion against castoffs of reality TV shows. The fans here just love watching him fight, the level of competition is not important. That is why, this matchup makes too much sense not to happen." Enzo Calzaghe, the Champion's father and trainer contiuned, "I know a victory in this contest will put to rest the whispers that Joe has been protected." It is unclear whether or not a Calzaghe victory in this matchup would mean a return to the States for the Tournament of Champions episode scheduled for May 8th.

at last a suitable situation has arisen for the phrase WTF??
Ali went in for this type of shennanigans once didn't he and got some real busted up legs.
I doubt this will be quite so brutal somehow.

Sure did, against the legendary Antonio Inoki (WCW put him on cards in the mid 90's and he had a career in the WWF in the late 70's). Ali had to go to hospital after the fight with severe brusing to his legs.

Guys, am I missing something here as surely this is a complete piss-take/fabrication?
As if allegedly would ever be quoted as saying: ""We have seen the level of interest here in pitting a World Champion against castoffs of reality TV shows."
Now either the entire piece is a mickey-take, or Joe is taking part to raise his profile and the guy who's penned this piece on the boxing forum has done a piss-take on certain elements.
However, I've just 'googled' Calzaghe's name in connection with Gladiators and it isn't throwing up any news results at all, which makes me suspect the whole thing is a joke.

A big clue is the comment which Enzo Calzaghe is supposed to have made - No way would Enzo say that and no way would he allow his sons training to be interrupted by that sort of thing going into such a major fight - Its rubbish and isnt even funny so whats the point.
