Dagenham stylist Colin Lynes defends his coveted European light-welterweight title on home turf at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre on January 25 against Finland's tough Juho "TNT" Tolppola.
Lynes won the vacant title with a dazzling eight-round stoppage of dangerous Midlander Young Muttley in the Midlands in July 2007 - six weeks after he won the British title from Scot Barry Morrison in Scotland. These are salad days for the 30-year-old part-time schoolteacher, the culmination of nine hard years in the hardest game. Lynes turned pro in 1998 and has learned from a few defeats to get better and better. He pushed current WBC light-welterweight champion Junior Witter all the way in a first challenge for the British and European titles in 2005 and his use of the jab against Muttley last time out was so breathtaking, one older punter compared him to the legendary Willie Pep.
Lynes, 30-3 (12), ultimately hooked off the jab and flattened Muttley with a big left hook.
So he goes in a big favourite against Tolppola who, despite his nickname, is not a massive puncher and was outscored in a 12-rounder by decent Italian Michele Di Rocco three fights ago in Finland. Another good Italian, Michele Orlando, nicked a split decision over him in a 12-rounder in Italy in 2004. British fans will remember Tolppola for the solid fight he put up against Manchester's then unbeaten David Barnes in Glasgow on the Scott Harrison-Victor Polo bill in January 2005. Barnes was coming off a career-best win (and performance) over the once world-ranked James Hare in six impressive rounds but never budged the Finn, who hails from Vantaa just outside Helsinki, and settled for a wide 10-round decision.
They are Tolppola's only defeats in 24.
Three years on from Barnes, 26-year-old Tolppola has lost only to Di Rocco in 11 contests and looks much-improved. He's rugged, capable, gutsy and durable - never stopped - although he probably lacks the punch and the finer edges to take him to a belt such as the European and is prone to cuts and swellings. His left eye was banged shut by the talented Barnes; he picked up a cut on the forehead in his last fight in October against Russian Alexander Saltykov and it was declared a technical draw (Tolppola was dominating).
Altogether, he is 20-3-1 (9).
Cuts apart (and Lynes bangs up himself), this one looks certain to go the full 12. Classy Colin has been messed around by official challenger Gianluca Branco in the build-up in the usual Italian way and might be a bit rusty, but while Tolppola will certainly give it a go, one inevitably sides with the local star.
