Come on then, who should Hatton fight instead?

For some reason, there are people on here who don't want to see the biggest domestic match-up since Eubank-Benn.

Obviously this subject has been argued back and forth ad nauseum, so let me just ask, putting aside the for and against Witter arguments, who you, as a fan, would rather see Hatton fight at this point?

De La Hoya? A big occasion and payday, but surely certain defeat, and flying in the face of Hatton insisting he will only compete at 140lb from now on.

Cotto? I would actually prefer this over Witter, but again, Hatton's not going to go up in weight again unless it's for De La Hoya's millions.

Malignaggi? Feather-fisted small LWW who's best win is against Ndou - who lost to Witter - and who struggled badly in his last fight. Plus he's only a champion because Hatton discarded the belt again. What's the point of picking this belt up for a third time? Anyway, I dare say Malignaggi won't get the fight because he's said some naughty things about Ricky in the press.

Torres? Dangerous, could be a good fight, but less name value and a lesser belt than Witter.

Rees? A domestic match that doesn't involve Witter? Are you kidding me?

Juan Diaz? Someone who's chubby at lightweight?

Someone else?

Tell me, who is a better match than Witter? Let's not continue going back and forth on whether or not he should fight Witter. Just tell me who's a better opponent. That's all.

That would be a great way to finish his career, against a guy who started his career at FLYWEIGHT and who has NEVER fought above SUPER FEATHER.

I never said I didn't want a slanging match ;) I just wanted a DIFFERENT one!

IMO there is only one match I'd rather see than Witter, and that's Cotto, but we're assuming that won't happen as Hatton says he won't go aboive 140 again.

So, if there's a better match for Hatton at 140, I want to know what it is and why.

You suggested a path that might happen, but is that honestly what you WANT to happen, more than a Witter fight?

The point is we would like to see Witter v Hatton but don'tr think witter is fecking king Kong like most on here.

Hatton is getting slated while Witter gets praise. It's bullshit. And I agree the recent threads have been the same...

One thing that does puzzle me about a proposed Witter-Hatton fight in the UK, as much as the fight not happening puzzles you Witter advocates, is that there is this avalanche of noise for the Witter bout but no one actually turns out for his UK-based fights. 3 title fights for the WBC title in recent times and it seems, if we can extrapolate larger numbers from this online fanbase (in which case I think he has roughly 5 billion fans), people are not actually supporting the guy. If his fans only pay lip service, over the 'net, about how unjust boxing is towards Witter why don't they go out and put money in his purse.

It is no pop or counter-pop. Just a question. Right now Witter must be the best supported fighter in the UK, if one was to go by Boxrec and the 'net, so what happens when he fights? Are you all washing your hair at those times?

Boxing is a tough and pragmatic sport and, say, Witter does lose his title in the USA, bang goes his title and his earning capability with only a small amount of time left in his career.

If the Hatton fight does not come off Witter fans are going to look back with dual regret. 1: I wish he could have fought Hatton 2: I wish I could have been arsed going to watch him fight.
It's a fair question, but I think the answer lies in Hatton's "pop culture" appeal. He transcends the sport and gets the according viewing figures. Witter does not.

I think Witter's fan base is comprised entirely of "knowledgeable fans", and as boxing is, in general, a bit of a niche sport these days, that's why we don't generally get very big crowds for anyone other than Hatton, Calzaghe and Haye-Maccarinelli.

In fact, David Haye himself got a very poor live gate for Bonin, a very small band of travelling support to France, and only three fights ago was still in the York Hall. But put him in the right fight and bingo, a 20,000 sell-out.

I have been a paying fan at Witter fights and I'm sure many on here have been too. But you can bet even those who haven't been would go to a Witter-Hatton fight.

It's not bullshit, Hatton used to say get to Frank to get It on he claims then starts changing what he says saying Junior Is disrespecting him.

As do I, which is why I wanted to put a different slant on the subject. If not Witter, then who? Perhaps you WOULD like to see the fight, but it comes across as if you don't, and many of us fail to understand this!

For me, in order of preference as a fan, I'd say:

1) Cotto
2) Witter
3) De La Hoya (just for the occasion)
4) Torres

If you read my posts properly it doesn't come across like that....I'm just not a Witter lover. Everything Ricky has achieved and done for British boxing and he gets so little respect from people who are supposed to know what they're talking about.

How about Malignanni? Decent fighter, winnable and would give him a title. Then maybe Witter, but Witter has to get past Hopkins first.

Cotto at light welter is winnable, but at welter he's murder Hatton...

DLH is not going to happen now. He won't get in with Witter for whatever reason.

Might need a confidence boost before such a big fight having just lost for the fist time...

I understand you completely. I try to steer myself away from talking about boxers unless I've seen them fight. That said, some records do look pretty impressive and it's hard not to say "wtf?! This guy's a legend!", or the opposite.

That is just a very much more eloquent version of the 'Hatton fans are lager lout idiots' answer that has come up this week.

I know people who have paid great amounts of money to watch Hatton over the years. They may not fit into your criteria of 'knowledge fans' (and online you have to be aware that some make rather liberal use of Boxrec in order to appear knowledgeable) yet those paying fans, who keep the sport going also, seem to be seen as worthy of ridicule as not knowing their stuff. They may not be able to tell you the scorecards of Ali-Norton III but to dismiss them as non-fans is nonsense. They know what they want from boxing, and it has proven to not be Witter.

Basically it seems you are saying the 'knowledge' fans are akin to the types of people (like Rio Ferdinand) who start turning up at football club when they begin to win things. You demand a Witter-Hatton fight on the proviso that you don't have to attend other Witter fights.

Hatton-Witter should happen, should have happened years ago but the non-support, consistent non-support throughout the levels, of Witter has hardly pushed the issue at any point.

You reap what you sow and Witter is only able to reap the minor fruits of his fans lethargy. For Witter there was a long-standing sense of entitlement, he has dropped it but it is sticking with his fans. Witter is now going out to put the spadework in, any chance his agrophobic fans might do the same?
Actually I wasn't having a dig at the "lager louts". My point was boxing is a niche sport, and the viewing/crowd figures for 99% of the fights involving 99% of the fighters bear credence to this. Therefore you have to be a knowledgeable fan to know about and appreciate Witter, Woods, Arthur, Rees, etc, despite them being world champions.

But obviously the bottom line so far as the promoter is concerned is money, and 20,000 "lager louts" is better than 1,000 "knowledgeable fans". Of course I recognise this.

Do you take exception to my suggestion the fans would turn out in droves for Hatton-Witter, but not Witter-anybody else? That's just plain logic! If you said to even the biggest fan, you can watch Witter five times versus Morua, Corley, Harris, Lynes and Kotelnik, or once versus Hatton, which do you think they'd choose? As I said using my example of the poor-selling David Haye, it's all about the right fight.

Hasn't Witter almost certainly ruled himself out of a proposed May date though by signing to fight Hopkins?

Rick will fight Torres or Lazcano IMO - that's not to say i think they're better choices than Witter cos they're not but see line 1.

Terry D wrote:Ps David Haye. May be a poor seller but you watch his fights and don't think "I'd pay not to watch him fight" whereas some people still think that with regards to Witter.
David Haye is the perfect illustration of my point about boxing audience figures on the whole. He's one of our most explosive fighters but until now couldn't pull more than a couple of thousand to his contests.

Witter might only draw one or two thousand paying punters because yes, he may only have this many committed fans. Neutrals and "lager louts" are not going to turn out to watch him vs Morua or even Harris. I recognise this. But they will come for a Hatton fight, and in greater numbers than any other fight involving either man in this country.

As for your Irish friend, well what a f'n surprise he went to Hatton-Tszyu instead of any Witter fight. It was one of the biggest occasions in British sport. I'm a fan of both, more so Witter (as you may have gathered!), but again, if you'd given me the choice between Hatton-Tszyu or any of Witter's fights, of course I would have gone to the Tszyu fight. To criticise someone for doing the same is like criticising someone for choosing to attend the World Cup final instead of a Premiership match.

The Haye comparison is perfectly valid. He's usually explosive. Witter sometimes is, sometimes isn't. Both of them have attracted similar sized crowds. This is because of their name recognition, no more, no less.

Chris Eubank was in a number of stinkers, but the fans kept coming, 10-20,000 a time, every two months, because he was a household name. It's the "pop culture" I referred to.

You slap the words "Hatton", "Calzaghe" or "Eubank" on a poster, and the man in the street stops to look at it. "Witter" and "Haye" does not have this effect. This has nothing to do with how excitig they are or aren't, it's to do with name recognition.

Getting back to the original question, only Terry has even tried to answer it.

Is there a better opponent out there?

And yes, I know Witter's signed to fight D-Hop, making it a moot point for now, but he could hardly be expected to wait for Hatton, could he?

Eubank, Hatton, Benn etc capture/d the imagination, we care about them. They are and were characters. A lot of beer-swilling morons turn up for Hatton fights and these people really annoy me, as you know as we've been to fights together.

We were both at the Rowland/Hatton fight for example and a lot of people there that night were just out to start a scrap and get drunk. Their reaction to Takaloo's victory was testament to that.

But Witter is just a tosser and dull. Good fighter, but he's not as deserving of praise as Ricky is IMO.

And Haye's not even been fighting for half as long as Junior in fairness, plus he doesn't always fight in the same area, like Carl is always at Nott Arena for instance.

And I said Malignanni or Cotto as good opponents for him. Malignnani the most likely, we have to be realistic.

Hatton could not be given too much stick for fighting Castillo, Mayweather then Malignanni in a row, not from anyone with half a brain.

As I've said 10 times, we'd all love to se Hatton in with Witter (and dismantle him in my case) but it doesn't look likely at the moment.

Dropping the UK rivalry shite, which is becoming tedious in the extreme (if one doesn't care about the "non-knowledgable" fans interest, then why even bring up the rivalry as it's only a bloody sales tactic for "non-knowledgable" fans?), from a purely aesthetic point of view I'd pick Mr Ricardo Torres.

Hits like a fricking mule kicks, punches wide & sloppy, couldn't fight going backwards if you put wheels on him.

Can't really fail to entertain, can it?

Also, now I think about it, are you saying that a bloke who's just fought the pound-for-pound number one bloke is not due a gimme?

Have to say, when I went to Hatton v Pendleton the crowd there was very unpleasant, loads of skinheads with scars on their faces pissed out of their minds looking for a ruck. When I left the Arena there were people fighting outside the arena all over the place. Was like the wild west.

Thank god there is Cage Rage and other such dross for them to attend now.

Back to the subject at hand, I think Oliver makes a valid point here. There are only a few big big names for him to fight.

Cotto, Moseley and Dela Hoya are about it.

Ofcourse I feel Witter should be first in line, if its not him I would settle for Edner Cherry!

Mosley would be a very good fight, dangerous too. Shane looks to have a fair bit left at 147, and is fast and strong.

Cotto is another great fight, but too dangerous and I think Ricky should avoid 147 to be honest.

Malignaggi would show us what Ricky has left, he should beat him pretty handily, but I wonder whether Paulie's footwork might cause him some serious problems at this stage.

Torres is an excellent call, blood and guts while it lasts, Hatton should smash him up inside the distance.

Malignaggi would be OK and an understandable match to make, given he's a US "name" with a decent fanbase and TV backing. Picking up the IBF title AGAIN is treading water for Ricky, though, and also fan bases excluded (and I know for economic reasons they cannot be), Malignaggi has not really earned his chance; certainly not as much as Witter.

Torres I agree looks to be a great scrap. I'd be happy to see that. But does it make sense from a business point? He doesn't have as good a name as Malignaggi or as good a belt as Witter, so therefore would probably not bring in as much of a payday.
