Great "Modern Day" Fights That Were Never Filmed

I got caught up in a thread about fights you watch over and over. How about great "modern era" fights that unfortunately were never filmed?
I'll start. Zale/Graziano I II

I saw maybe 10 seconds of film of one of the first two Graziano-Zale fights on ESPN Classic. Not much, and it was barely viewable, but still counts as a fight that was filmed, I suppose.

I would say that I might consider giving up a finger to be able to watch the three Charles-Moore fights.

Sometimes a fan would bring in his home 8mm movie camera to a fight. There's a little footage like that of LaMotta/Cerdan

Yes, that's exactly what it appeared to be. I've been watching a lot of fights on youtube recently and I saw some LaMotta-Cerdan footage on there early last week, I had always wanted to see that. Again, wasn't much, but still interesting.

There's been a lot of mention of Dulio Loi. No film on this guy?

Posted: 27 Jan 2008, 02:27
by nobudius
Loi film seem to exist-atleast some clips. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more in Italy somewhere. I've felt this way about additional Jofre footage-somewhere in Brazil....

Gypsy Joe Harris footage has been very elusive-there has to be more.

Bob Montgomery is another fighter with no footage available-as well as additional Beau Jack, when he is not getting lit up by Ike Williams.

I have heard Hagler's loss to Monroe was never filmed, which is unfortunate.

Ever notice the awesome fights for "next week" on the Gillette & Pabst Blue Ribbon cards? lol-you know what to do... atleast they were televised, but some of them are not available in the trading circles. Wonder what happened to them?

I have a 5min HL of Loi against Ray Famechon, but that is all I`ve managed to find of him over the years. I`m sure there is more as Nobu says, it is a matter of tracking it down. Same applys to footage of Eder Jofre, as there is a 5minute HL of his second bout versus Jose Medel and a brief 1 min HL of his bout vs Katsutoshi Aoki both of which I have in my possession. I have also been told that Jofre`s bout versus Bernardo Caballaro was filmed as well, although I have yet to track it down and would probably have to go down to Brazil to find it if it is true.

I mentioned this in another thread. What a great idea it would be to gather a complete data base on filmed fights and where they can be found.

You seem to have a lot of time on your hands these days, perhaps you can make a start.

What does your own fight film collection consist of?

Posted: 27 Jan 2008, 18:13
by BoxBuzz
Well I consider anything that is on YOUTUBE part of my "personal collection" these days.
and in addition to that I have quite a few 8mm fights ranging from the 40's to the early 70's. Then a lot of BETA and VHS tapes that I have yet to move to DVD.

I have not done an inventory but they are pretty well known fights....I'm not sure if I have any closet gems. Championship at many weight levels for the most part though I did get a series of about 25 " Gillette friday night at the fights" VHS tapes that were done for me by a friend in Phx AZ who had copied them from some old reel to reel videos that tv stations used to store and just had them saved and owed me a favor.

VHSWES may have the best collection of anyone here...he can be PM'd I think he even posted his inventory once.

Yeah...I know you were not serious....you just figured you'd force me to admit that I only have one, that copy of Foreman Cooney that I happened to have because I left my "Saturday Night Live" recording run to long that one night in 1989 or 90. ....and with a little scotch tape and a screwdriver I just might get it up and running again!

hahahahaha, what makes you think I was not serious?

I've been a fan of boxing since I started working with a bloke in 1977 who was a big fan. We used to drive long distances as part of the job and he always had a few copies of the great British weekly Boxing News and out of boredom one day I started reading them. I've been hooked since though my interest waned a little in the late 80's, early 90's when my kids were very young and I had more important tasks at hand.

I've been collecting fights since I got my first VCR in the early 80's. The first fight I recorded was Holmes vs Cooney.

For the last few years I have been converting the VHS tapes to DVD. It's a time-consuming affair but I enjoy it. I find it therapeutic.

Even after weeding out the duplicates and shite I am up to 4000 DVDs. Sad isn't it?

Do you still have a BETA machine? I think they still make a few every year for clowns like us.

I have a lot of footage on Loi. The most I have is extended highlites of his fight with Ortiz at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.

Theres about 15 mins on LaMotta-Cerdan and bout 3 or 4 on Zale-Graziano 2.

One of the Robinson-Gavilan fights was filmed but it has been lost.

Could you post any of that on YouTube by any chance? Or can you download some Loi to others ?

I would very much like to see him especially against Ortiz....

In his biography Chris Christensen claims that his 15 round fight against Loi for the European title was sent live on danish TV, but I have never heard that the film should exist any more. I have a small newsreel clip of Duilio Loi´s first fight in Denmark against Jorgen Johansen.

Buzz--I think a couple of guys in the IBRO have put together a couple of lists of all filmed fights. It would be a tremendous resource for fans as well as an excellent research tool. All anyone would need to do is gain access to the fight collection that ESPN bought from Cayton, which had been collected for decades by Jim Jacobs and in terms of old fights...Jacobs collection was unreal and now it is somewhere stashed away in some espn storage building, but a person could list 25,000+ fights from that collection.

Spiteful says the fellow who comes running like a whipped pup anytime he see's someone bashing me, but funny...the only time that I ever correspond with him is when he jumps in to attack me. I pay no attention to most of your threads and as soon as I respond to you about something you are then forgotten, until the next time you flare up! I mean really...it's become an obsession with you. Spiteful...you might want to look in the mirror.

But you see...as long as you debate in a sensible manner all is good...it's when you start ranting and raving the insults that I delete, or lock a thread, but as long as you act like an adult then all is good...well that is until you, or someone else decides to start a thread bashing me and then you will come running to jump in...just like you always do!

Besides...it's not Buzz that needs to keep it clean...he always keeps it clean...it's people like you that need to be moderated!

YouTube is a great fan, I have been getting quite a few fights from it of late and then burning on dvd or vcd to bolster my collection.

I have heaps of VHS tapes. I am slowly replacing with DVDs. I find room as being the biggest issue.

I am trying to get every HW fight I can get my hands on. Only have so much $ though :( With my Boxing, MMA, grappling, and the likes collection I am running short of room.

The internet has made sourcing alot of films and fights so much easier. Alot of these fights that are rare, who owns the rights to them ?

Many of Mike Mccallum's earlier fights are to get. I've seen a Spanish version of McCallum-Jackson that was very poor quality, but that's it. Would love it in English and clear picture.

Many lost films to get found again.

The Hager-Finnegan fights are ones that I've been looking for too...

English version exists of McCallum v Jackson, but I am afraid that we will never get to see Hagler v Finnegan..

What program do you use to get the videos off of Youtube?

Yeah...I'm sure you really believe that...must be why you always...always...come running, like a whipped little pup, every time you see someone else arguing with me...LOL.

I don't know...I guess you think that somehow, some way that you might be able to get the better of me just this one time, but that "just this one time" has stretched out into years...LOL...and you are still reaching for the first "just this one time." What a life you must lead...are you as jealous and envious of all the people in your every day life as well...like you are with me...LOL?

Besides, if someone were wanting to hide a thread, where they "supposedly" got "owned," locking the thread would be useless...after all...people can read locked threads there genius! Not too bright are you collins?

There...now you have a little inspiration to chew on for the next five years...LOL...just so your grudge stays up to date, but what am I talking about...up to date...you come running like that whipped little pup, even after I have ignored you for a year, but I've had my fun, so it's now time to once again ignore you and then just wait for the next person to start a thread about me as I know that I can always count on you to come running and join in...LOL...just like the little whipped pup you are!
