Hatton back in the gym!
IBO junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton is back in the gym after returning to his hometown of Manchester, England following a two-week safari in South Africa. Things are on target for the Hitman's return on May 24 at the City of Manchester Stadium, possibly in the early morning hours to accomodate US TV. The Manchester Evening News is reporting that Team Hatton has narrowed it down to a shortlist of four potential opponents. "As for Ricky's opponent, there have been Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans and Brits looking to challenge him. That's all I want to say about it at the moment," Ricky's father and manager Ray Hatton told the paper.

Who's in the running?

USA - Malignaggi, Diaz?
PR - no significant Boricuas at LWW - surely not Cotto or Cintron?
Mexico - Lazcano?
UK - Rees? (surely not Witter)

Money down on Torres for me.

I've got the Manchester Evening News in front of me and as well as that quote from Ray Hatton, it says (not a quote) that the shortlist of four includes Paulie Malignaggi (although the paper calls him Malignacci )and Ricardo Torres.

Good point. Ray could be talking about anyone from the continent of America. There might be a pretty tough Greenland Inuit being lined up for May 24.

The quote does say "looking to challenge him".

Im sure just about every contender in the 140 and 147 lb divisions want to challenge him but that doesnt mean Hattons going to consider it. At the end of the day the only fight the fans want to see is Witter, and we know the next fight is gonna be someone in the wrong division just to make millions, or someone not good enough to pose a serious threat.

Same here. The Team Hatton PR machine is banging on about how Hatton is going to give something back to the British fans by staging a fight in Britain again, but what they don't mention is it's not going to be against an opponent that anyone who follows boxing is interested in seeing him fight.

The MEN article goes on to say

Cintron, Diaz, Cotto and Malinaggi are already contracted to fight, so can't be them Oliver.

Ray Hatton has said not Rees or Witter (both are already contracted to fight).

If it's not Torres, and by the title I'm guess not, it can only be Lazcano for me. And that's a sht oppoent to have as Harris owned his ass in 2007.

He has just fought Mayweather, Castillo....and now Torres or Malignanni is likely.

Witter is facing Demetrius Hopkins and gets no stick at all.

I, for one, have never had a problem with Ricky not fighting Witter next. I have, however, had a problem in the past with him saying he'll never fight Witter.

I've always said that Ricky needs an easy(ish) comeback, but he's left it so late to name an opponent most have gone now and I am fairly pissed off for that. They've concentrated too much on who they won't face,not who they will.

Hopkins, Witter, Cotto (fantasy), Malinaggi, N'Dou, Holt, Rees and Kotelnik are all booked. The only remaining are Salida or Torres and the former is a Golden Gloves champ but hasn't fought a landmark fight yet and Torres should've lost to Holt anyway.

All of the decent opponents are now booked, and the thought of him and Lazcano takes me back to his WBU days.

Personally I can't stand Witter, but I respect his skills and the level of fighter he is now.

Sorry mate, but going from #1 P4P to this is fairly poor IMO.

A fight with Witter would be great, but Witter is fighting Hopkins now. He says he will never fight him but I reckon he will eventually.

I hope he does and then stands him on his head.

Torres and Malignanni are OK fights, but they are poor in comparison to the BIGGEST All-British fight ever. Surely it has to happen after Hattons next fight

Yeah matey, he's MADE US WAIT by instead facing the likes of Tszyu, Castillo, Mayweather, Collazo and Maussa.....

Would be great to see them fight but Ricky is getting far too much stick IMO.
