Boxrec Hall of Fame Ballot (February 2008)

Posted: 01 Feb 2008, 10:24
by Ambling Alp
It's time for another Hall of Fame Election. The deadline for submitting a ballot is Noon CDT on February 15, 2008. I will total the ballots shortly after that.

A brief summary of the rules:
-A voter can vote up to 25 names. (If you vote for more than 25, your entire ballot doesn't count.)
-A fighter's last fight has to be before February 15, 1998 to be eligible.
-You can change your vote. Your last vote before the deadline will be the one counted.
-Candidates who are named on atleast 75% of the ballots are elected.
Go to the Boxrec Hall of Fame Sticky (p.2) for more complete rules.

To vote, just list your selections on this thread. (Don't put them on the Hall of Fame Sticky.)

It would be appreciated if you list your selections in alphabetical order.

It's a good idea to check every name that other voters have on their ballot. You may find someone that you overlooked.

So far there had a been a good variety of fighters from different era's, with the exception of the lack of fighters elected from the 1880's and 1890's. Hopefully people will consider the best fighters from that era. There has been decent representation of different weight classes, styles, etc. Hopefully that will continue.

Dixon and Walcott should be in by now, gentlemen. Gavilan and Kid Chocolate are also glaring omissions IMO.

I hope these 4 make it this time.

Is there a category for boxing historian?

Is it even possible for Foreman not to get in on his first year of eligibility?

Posted: 08 Feb 2008, 10:15
by Ambling Alp
It's certainly possible that Foreman won't make it. I'm not sure everyone realizes that he is now eligible, so that may be one reason that he hasn't got a lot of support yet so far. However people can change their votes, and more people will be voting, so maybe Foreman will make it this time.

I guess we all have one or two guys that we can't believe haven't made it yet. I know Ezzard feels strongly that Kid Gavilan and Kid Chocolate should be in by now. Pundit can't believe Basilio isn't in. In the past there have been strong arguements for Packey McFarland, and also for some of the great fighters of the 1880's and 1890's.
Personally, I can't for the life of me understand why we haven't elected Michael Spinks yet. Besides Fighting Harada, he is the only fighter that you could really make a serious case as being the best of all time in his weight class that hasn't been voted in yet.

It really shows that there is a wide range of opinions. It's tough, because there are so many close calls. It is a lot of fun though. For someone to be elected, they really must have been great.

It baffles me no end, how guys like Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston could get in ahead of Packey McFarland, Panama Al Brown, Tommy Ryan, Kid McCoy and Pascual Perez. Not saying they weren't very good fighters, but their resumes pale in comparison. Obviously it's that huge obsession with the heavyweight division.
