Unique And Amazing Ring Achievements

I imagine no real boxing expert would ever disparage your opinion if you stated that the 3 greatest fighters who ever lived were Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong and Willie Pep. So it boggles the mind that Sammy Angott would not only face all 3 of these greats in less than 11 months time, but that he would survive an all out attack by Robinson after actually winning the first 3 rounds, end Pep's 62-0 streak by handing him his first loss, and then lose a narrow decision to Armstrong in an all out war with a fighter who still had several good performances left in him. If that wasen't enough, sandwiched in between the Robinson and Pep fights, Angott virtually shutout Aldo Spoldi, a veteran good enough to have KO'd Jackie "Kid" Berg and to have drawn with Willie Joyce and Leo Rodak, not to mention that 24 days before the Robinson bout he had won a 12 rd Split Decision over future Hall of Famer Bob Montgomery.

Another achievement that's amazed me for some time, was Benny Leonard's 32 days of glory in 1916 when he beat Rocky Kansas, Johnny Dundee, Sam Robideau, Shamus O'Brien and Freddie Welsh in of course 32 days. That's 2 Hall of Famers (Dundee and Welsh) a guy who deserves to be in the HOF (Kansas) a fringe contender (Robideau) and a journeyman (O'Brien).

Most remarkable of all is lightweight Sammy Angott acting the aggressor for the whole fight against Fritzie Zivic, when Zivic was at his best

Angott lost the decision.

In his next fight Zivic won the welterweight title from Henry Armstrong.

Angott was one of the strongest lightweights in the history of boxing.

He actually acted as the aggressor in fights with great welterweights Zivic and Robinson.

There are films of both fights.

Featherweight Willie Pep made a bad choice choosing Angott as an opponent and ended up with his first loss.

There is a well-known photo after the fight of Pep lying exhausted on a dressing room table holding an icebag against his forehead.

Good input Granberry. My opinion of Angott continues to go up the more I learn about him. I also understand that in his first bout with Ike Williams, his split decision loss was highly disputed with many believing Angott had been a clear winner. I think the AP had him winning by 5 rounds !

Greb 1919

Ive always felt Greb's 1919 was pretty remarkable. He fought almost fifty times and undefeated while facing guys like Levinsky, Miske, Brennan, Clay Turner, Mike Gibbons, Leo houck, Jeff Smith and even got revenge on his one KO loss by dominating Joe Chip.

"pretty remarkable" ?

He fought more times in that one year than many so-called all time greats do in a whole career.

And most of his fights were against the best lightheavyweights and heavyweights in the world, even though he was a middleweight.

Please come up with a better phrase than "pretty remarkable."

Klompton, how's the book progressing?

I recall you had some personal problems a while back that held it up.

Hopefully this is now sorted.

if you say it loud enough you'll always sound precocious

Ah, Mary Poppins, at last, a topic that Boxbuzz can have some meaningful input on.

My rantings rarely relate to the protestant church in Ireland.

Pugilism. Now there's a subject you should steer well clear of if you want to continue the charade.

I just watched my first fight last week, and I think it's a damned interesting sport and I'm not going to let your intimidating mannerisms ruin my enthusiasm for this novel interest of mine.

However, I have faith in the great teachings that you share here from time to time and I'll continue to trust that that what you say is directly taken from the Tibetan book of the dead and to be revered when it comes to this sport. I'm sure that will get me through any moments of doubt I may have.

As far as the Irish protestant church rantings go you would do well to remember that the house of Shep is holy and shall be respected.

I was forced to petition the house of shep last week.

As a direct result, I believe someone is upset and has taken to their bed again.

It's ironic isn't it that this forum works far better when we are one moderator down?

That is a damned good accomplishment.

Ashame that it takes the hard looking hard core
fan to appreciate this.

I must confess I am pretty ignorant as to the llighter
weight classes from that era.

The book is going well. Full speed ahead. I had several problems: birth of first child, wife went nuts, divorce, bad car accident switch in jobs, new girlfriend being diagnosed w cancer, etc. But now most of that is straightened out and the only problems that stand in my way are the program that Im writing the book on keeps crashing which often means I have to go back and rewrite large chunks that i hadnt saved. Talk about maddening. Before long I might start publishing excerpts on the net to drum up interest.

Good to hear everything is now OK.

I think publishing excerpts would be a great idea.

Yep. Isn't there an autosave feature that makes a record of your entries, so that even if you haven't saved & you suddenly drop out, it can be recovered? You can time it to autosave on different slots e.g. after every 10, 20, 30 minutes etc.

I'm no computer expert, but most seem to have this function.

Just reading accounts of the bout between Angott and Armstrong and noticed the Associated Press scored the fight for Angott 5-4-1.
